IRAN VOWS REGIONAL INTERVENTION

NICOSIA [MENL] -- Iran has warned that it plans to intervene in the Middle East, including in the affairs of such neighbors as Afghanistan and Iraq.

In the first such high-level assertion, a leading Islamic military commander has placed the United States on notice that Iran reserves the right to intervene in the Middle East, Gulf and Central Asia. The commander said Iran would also seek to control events across the border in neighboring Afghanistan and Iraq.

"Iran is in the center of three strategic and sensitive regions -- the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucasus ," Maj. Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said. "The Islamic republic, for this reason, can play a decisive role in regional political, economic, cultural and security arrangements."

Safavi outlined Iran's sphere of influence in an address designed to challenge U.S. policy. The IRGC commander said the United States must recognize Iran 's dominant role in the Gulf and warned that it would not be ignored in major regional developments.

Somethings brewing. The regime is on shaky ground and they might be ready to do a really futile and stupid gesture on their part.

Which is precisely why I need to talk to someone. I think I can kick the legs out from under the argument used to kill the program, and still acheive the mission goals.

They're talking like they already have a bomb or two.

That's like bringing a pixie stick to a sword fight. Can anybody say Armageddon

Wow. Those Iranistainians in power really have it in for themselves. I find it hard to believe that they don't already have a bomb. I would also hypothesize that OBL is probably a guest of the Mullocracy in Iran as well.

I keep reading how we don't have the ability to truly invade and conquer Iran.

Our ability is only limited by our willingness...If the United States as a people wanted to occupy Iran...it would happen.

There is nothing this nation is incapable of...provided it is willing.

Sounds like Saddam 20 years ago when he had grand ambitions.

This is serious folks.

This is desparate rhetoric from a regime that will eventually be ousted (looking like sooner rather than later).

It becomes serious when the Iranian army starts blantantly and openly crossing borders and killing American/Israeli soldiers; and/or detonating a nuke somewhere. Until then...its a bluff. Its a bluff even more so because the Iranian regime ain't dumb...they know their country would be a glistening crater of glass if they plan on using WMD's against American soldiers or Israel proper.

BTW...I hope I'm right.

It's as if they have agents already inside America ready to conduct jihadi operations and they are goading us to start something sooner than we might want to. Hmmm.

Iran has warned that it plans to intervene in the Middle East, including in the affairs of such neighbors as Afghanistan and Iraq.

And America and Israel have the answer for Iran's frogginess...

And we have a similar message for Syria, and the Halls of Evil: Mecca and Medina...time to remove the Koranimals from the face of the Earth!

Sounds to me like they are closer to having nukes than the "Intelligence" (at least some call it intelligence) believes.

"Intelligence" will say Iran has nukes once they witness the first mushroom cloud.

Nope. They'll still be denying it...

A LOT has been going on with Iran recently. Check this thread:

The New Threats from Iran are Serious

It makes sense to pay attention to what they do and say. It also makes sense to pay attention to what they believe, how that might impact what they do, and when.

Iranians are mostly Shiite. They have a prophecy (NOT believed by all Muslims) that says the Mahdi will be revealed in a year with a Ramadan that includes two eclipses.

It is debatable whether THIS year's Ramadan meets the necessary criteria, but it might. What is VERY clear, however, is that it will be a very long time before another Ramadan that comes this close occurs again. If the current fanatics running Iran want this prophecy to come true in their lifetimes, something has to happen very soon. Their current actions are consistent with a decision on their part to take matters into their hands.

I doubt that we possess the force or force structure that would allow us to intervene successfully in another middle eastern dust-up. We can't even properly staff the operations we now have on-going in Iraq without mobilizing the Guard and reserve. And, we will not have that capability unless and until a president, any president, and Congress grows the cajones to place the nation on a war footing with economic measures, reinstitute a compulsory military service and impose a tax increase to fund our operations.

The debt our current operations is generating is becoming less attractive to international financial resources every day. The Euro's acendancy as the reserve currency of the world and the concomitant decrease of that role by the dollar has the capacity to place us on the same fiscal path that saw the demise of the Soviet bear. LBJ said: "Guns and butter," and the resounding failure of that policy can be repeated easily.

Iran lost a million casualties trying to beat Saddam. We did it in about two weeks.

They should keep that in mind. Iran is an amalgam of a half dozen different nations. With a good excuse we could suddenly become Champions of Baluchi Independence. And Azeri Independence. We could suddenly wish to see Iran's arab southwest liberated. And so on.
