Both sides prepare for fight over Alito

ANALYSIS: Specter of filibuster is raised as GOP right prepares to flex its power

Washington -- President Bush's nomination of Samuel Alito Jr. for the Supreme Court sets up a direct clash with Senate Democrats, finally igniting the momentous judicial battle that both parties have been anticipating for years.

Republicans see an opportunity to install a lasting conservative majority on the high court as they characterize Democrats as obstructionists who try to accomplish in court what they cannot accomplish through legislation.

Democrats sense a chance to portray their opponents as reactionaries who would set back the causes of civil rights, workers and social justice and the president as a leader beholden to the demands of his party's far right wing.

After a surprising respite from the judicial war that dominated Washington last spring, Bush's decision Monday morning seemed likely to resurrect the fight over filibusters, activist judges and the political right's clout at the White House.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said a filibuster is "on the table -- it has to be on the table,'' after describing the Alito choice as a capitulation to the right.

Most senators chose their words carefully so as not to appear biased before the confirmation process gets under way. Yet there was an unmistakable sense from both sides that "we're ready to rumble,'' as Family Research Council President Tony Perkins told ABC News.

"There's going to be a fight. There needs to be a fight. And we're ready,'' Perkins said.

Good. The best way to get the judicial filibuster off the table for once and for all is for the DIMs to go along with that idiot Boxer.

Please filibuster, so we can break it.

Pssst, Senator Boxer, the fillibuster is off the table. You were sold out by seven of your own party. They provided political cover for the fillibuster to be broken. Its over you brainless moron.

"As we approach the election, people are going to be hit with a reality that they are stuck with the president until Jan. 20, 2009, and the only way to check him is with a Democratic Congress,'' Boxer said.

I'm in shock. Boxer has finally realized Bush isn't going to be impeached? Well, this is progress for the woman. Still delusional, but a little less so.

Tony Perkins seems to share my attitude. Bring it on. LOL

If Alito is confirmed without much fuss, we win. If we break a filibuster to confirm, we win. If Alito isn't on that court, we win because we'll target RINO's and Dems in '06. It's all good.

I can guarantee this: the Dems' only significant means of fighting him will be to find a college chum-turned-to-the-darkside who says they went to a titty-bar together one time (or some similar tack).
