TORONTO, October 31, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - On November 10, 2005, Toronto's St. Michael's Cathedral will be holding a fundraiser for an event sponsored by St. Michael's Catholic Hospital to provide "'Life with Dignity' to people affected by HIV/AIDS in the developing world." However, Catholics and pro-family groups are concerned that the St. Michael's Hospital fundraising project, called "Angels in Africa", contravenes the teaching of the Catholic Church and the best health options for people threatened with AIDS by promoting condom usage.

more stupid leading the stupid
AIDS in Africa is near epidemic proportions due to needle re-use
It is too late for those who have it- but they could control it with a good supply of FRESH NEEDLES
Condom pushing? In what way?
How about an effort in pushing the GOOD NEWS? That alone will save millions from AIDS.
You are correct.
However, the GOOD NEWS is the hard path. It requires dumping prostitution, drug addiction, promiscuity and adultery, that is, self-control.
Impossible! We just sent Fourteen Billion of our Dollars to Africa to stop the spread of AIDS.
yeah-I know.. I wonder where all that money went?
Because they ain't really Catholic. To be Catholic is to be in communion with Catholic church. It is OK to not be in communion if you wish but you should drop the name "Catholic" if you want to be honest. That is where Protestant comes from. Protesting the beliefs they disagree with.
Moral Absolutes Ping.
Yup, the "Catholic Church" is at it again - promoting sin, promoting evil, and while they're at it, promoting stupidity and yes, death - since condoms don't prevent AIDS that well.
Take note I am NOT bashing Real Catholics, the Church's actual teachings or sincere priests or lay Catholics one iota. Just the liberal/leftist/lavender mafia fools who dress up as Catholics and play at religion while having their own plans, their own wills, and their own agenda which have nothing to do with God's will, plans, or agenda.
Freepmail me if you want on/off this pinglist.
As a long time atheist, turned Protestant, and in the middle of conversion to Catholicism, who grew up in a largely "Catholic" area on the east coast, let me say that the Church is in part to blame for this problem. There are endless numbers of people who go through the motions of getting confirmed, and even getting married in the Church, who otherwise have nothing to do with it. I know, they were all my friends from childhood until now.
One of my best friends will say that he is Catholic (becauase his parents were, and he was confirmed) but hasn't been to confession since he was a kid and will say that he doesn't even think that he believes in God. Catholicism has been passed down somewhat as a cultural rather than an actual relgious distinction in many communities. The result is tons of people who go around calling themselves Catholic even though they aren't really any such thing.
The Church has done nothing really to go against this. After all, the Church wants the kids to go to Sunday School, be confirmed, etc.
It also doesn't help of course that many Priests don't seem to want to reinforce church teachings. When I was the best man in the wedding of the best friend mentioned above, at the rehersal the Priest said when it would be my turn (after the bride and groom) to take communion. I said that I wasn't Catholic. He said "Oh, it doesn't matter". I said, well, I won't take it, and didn't.
Sorry for the rambling post, just wanted to get some thoughts on the matter out there.
This might be of interest to you guys.
Your intellectual honesty is appreciated. As for the priest ... Where's Tomas de Torquemada now that we really need him?
Canada Ping!

My kids go to a Catholic School. They used to do the UNICEF thing at Halloween until we filled them in on what some of the money is used for.
Thanks and you're right I did want to get some thought out there. I love my faith. One of the wonders and mystery is how many Catholics never even get to know the fullness of the faith. The even greater wonder is that God allows it. Maybe from Gods perspective its a lot easier to understand but man I sure hope He grades on a curve for their sake. There is a simpleness to many Catholics but if they are ever in trouble the first place you find 'em is in church on their knees.
