I agree, accept for the "last bastion" part. They still have public education under control and a strong grip on the media and entertainment.

Well, there is a solution to their grip on public education--homeschooling. IMHO, the homeschooling community has the potential to be the bastion of educational excellence in the US. But that's another topic for another time.
