The buzz: Verdict is in: Campaign mailer outrages foes

Jury duty is good citizenship, but using that phrase to fool voters into reading your political mail is not.

That's the feeling of Proposition 77 advocates, who were upset last week that opponents of the redistricting initiative sent mailers to Republicans with the words "JURY DUTY" next to a postmark.

"This is really an outrage, it's a pretty sleazy tactic here," said Steve Poizner, a pro-77 campaign leader who said the appearance is meant to make voters think they are opening a jury summons.

Inside, the mailer attacks Proposition 77 but makes no reference to juries.

"Rumor has it that people supporting Proposition 77 don't like jury duty," said Tom Kaptain, whose Citizens for Good Government produced the flier.

Beneath "JURY DUTY," the mailer has the words "IS GOOD CITIZENSHIP" in smaller bold type. Poizner filed a complaint Friday. Kaptain said his mail was harmless.

"I think you've got to remember that there's a glut of advertising in this election, and I have an obligation to my clients to get their message to the voters," Kaptain said.

This is typical evil democrat deceit.

On a positive note, it is so vile that this "Jury Duty" will enrage a lot of voters!

I can only hope this is another Democratic "shoot themselves in the foot" type of maneuver.

I see no problem with this. In fact, it's pretty clever.

I got it and couldn't believe it. I thought my wife had jury duty. I opened it up and sure enough, if was the campaign garbage. I told my wife that it was awfully clever of them because I would not have opened it up if it didn't say jury duty.

Most people find "Jury Duty" to be an abuse by Big Government and the democrat party's corrupt Trial Lawyer Industry.

This will backfire massively. I hope these crooks conduct a huge bogus Jury Duty campaign.

Rumor has it that Tom Kaptain is a hermaphrodite serial child molester. Is it true? Who knows! But RUMOR HAS IT, you see.

I agree - It's a great example of good American thinking.

We should applaud the ad agdncy for that campaign and if the conservatives in that area had more sense, they would hire that ad firm themselves.

I believe we call that .... free enterprise and the American Way.

All's fair in politics and war. Some of the historical hit pieces are amazing--and those were from the press. ;^)
