Ah, the Bavarian Illuminati (1776-1785), started in a culture that loved lengthy conspiracy stories as much as do intrigued readers in currently Islamist areas of the Middle East,... It's an interesting topic for those who don't get lost in the more prevalent and widely various kooky conspiracy chronicles. The Enlightenment, associated paganism and romanticism spawned quite a few "secret societies" for the idle rich--especially fiction writers and other artists.

Excerpt:
"
A movement of freethinkers that were the most radical offshoot of The Enlightenment whose adherents were given the name Illuminati (but who called themselves "Perfectibilists") was founded on May 1, 1776 by the ex-Jesuit Adam Weishaupt (d. 1830), professor of canon law, and Baron Adolph von Knigge, in Ingolstadt, Bavaria (now Germany)."
