What did "Scooter" Libby say to TIME's Matt Cooper about Valerie Plame? It seems Matt Cooper and TIME don't even agree.
Quoting from Michael Duffy's article we read:
"Although Libby maintained under oath that he first heard about Plame's identity from reporters and passed it on to others as mere gossip, Fitzgerald's indictment offers considerable evidence that it was the other way aroundthat Libby told two reporters, including TIME's Matthew Cooper, about Plame's work for the CIA, and that he lied to investigators about one of those conversations and confected a third out of whole cloth One is written by Matt Cooper himself, in which he details his conversations with "Scooter" Libby."
This is basically Fitzgerald's case against Scooter is it not? So what does Matt Cooper himself say?
Again, quoting from a TIME piece on Drudge today, written by Cooper we read:
"The Wilson part that really interested Fitzgerald was tiny, as I told TIME readers. Basically, I asked Libby if he had heard anything about Wilson's wife having been involved in sending him to Niger. Libby responded with words to the effect of, 'Yeah, I've heard that too.'"
What am I missing here? Isn't Cooper's recollection of the conversation the same as Libby's??? If so, what did Libby do wrong? NOWHERE in Cooper's piece does he say that Libby planted the Valerie story with him. Indeed, he admits that it was he, Cooper, that asked Libby about Plame and Wilson, and all Libby said was "Yeah, I heard that, too.". Again, isn't that what Libby has maintained?
If Libby did what Fitzgerald says he did, then Cooper would know that Libby had flat-out lied, but what does Cooper say at the end of today's piece?
"I was surprised last week that the Libby indictment even mentioned me. But apparently his recollection of the conversation differed from mine in a way that led the prosecutor to think he was lying. As for me, I still have no idea if Libby or anyone else has committed a crime.
I just don't get it. Can anyone explain this mess?
It's a show trial. TIME Magazine says that Karl Rove was "bloodied" by this investigation even if he wasn't charged.
Pure political smear. Much worse than McCarthyism ever was.
Wake up people. The MSM is still running their 2004 election mode. Lie to the masses to run the Bush Administration out of office.
I thought it was Cooper that brought up the subject of Plame with Rove, not Libby? You have it stated here that Cooper asked Libby..is that right?
This is exactly right (though I don't think they plan to run GWB from office. They just want to hurt the GOP and GWB along the way with their continuous lies / spin).
Who needs to wake up is the RNC! The GOP Senators! They continually allow false premise after false premise to be set day after day on TV News programs. And then once the false premise has been set....they try and talk from there.
You can't win that way. You have to set the premise first! The correct / factual premise. Be it over Iraq, the GWOT, Plamegate, etc, etc.
The RNC and those Senators going on TV are a joke! The WH PR machine hasn't been much better in the last 8 months.
Can't wait for Scooter Libby's Attorney's to go to work on all of this.
I agree. Time for the GOP to give as good as it gets.
R-U-S-S-E-R-T.
Is Cooper's question on tape or did he ask it after the camera's were off?
Never mind the question.
Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but I've read the indictment and nowhere do I see the actual allegations against Libby spelled out in plain English. Scenarios are laid out, and the reader is left for himself to deduce what it was that Libby did wrong. I believe the whole point of the investigation, and the indictment, is to lead people to the conclusion that Plame was illegally "outed," even though that's clearly not the case. The idea is obfuscation.
After this indictment, and this account from Cooper, Fitz didn't have JACK and we should all begin to see this clearly...
I don't neccessarily think Fitz was on a witch hunt, but he surely had to come away with something after two years. Actually this is pathetic with Cooper's novalistic personal hygene account of what he was doing!
You can see Cooper's prickishness in all it glory.
Easy to explain. When you have a lame brained Fitzzzzzzzzzzz who botched the case from the beginning and is now trying to "save his ass". This is normal for jacka@@ attorneys that their ego is greater than their sense. This Country is full of these witch hunting fools call Lawyers who have invented their own excape hatch. He is hoping to offer Libby a plea to find out more info. He will lose and wait until the trial. Fitzzzzzzzzz will meet his match and then some.
I agree with your assessment. Notice Fritz kept using the word "Classified" in his press conference the other day and then he flatly stated NO ONE was accused of OUTING Plame...and the more I think about this the more pissed off I get about it...
There is no excuse for lying to a GJ, but did Libby really, intentionally lie? I'm questioning this now...
According to Cooper's most recent article, he did ask Libby about Wilson's wife, not the other way around. (He may have also been the one who brought her up with Rove but, as I read it, he doesn't address that in his latest article.)
Yeah. Why does he think the reader cares if he showered that day or ate a tuna sandwich?
Because these were indictments for the sake of indictments. And it was written by a "prosecutor" attempting to justify his 2 year investigation and to cover his sorry rear end.
bttt
You're not the only one. I suspect he's a hack for the Democrats, and until I see some evidence to the contrary, I'll continue to suspect him.
They LOST. They are LOSERS. To continue to lie to the public over such matters shows them to be DESPOTS dictating to the masses to help out their buddies.
