Down but Not Out - After Katrina and Scooter, whither the Bush administration?

Whither the Bush administration? Two months ago, just before Katrina hit New Orleans, the administration had a game plan that it seemed to be, more or less successfully, executing. Since then that plan has been blown away by hurricanes meteorological, political and, yesterday, legal. In late August, Congress seemed primed to extend the earlier Bush tax cuts. House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas seemed ready to push some form of Social Security reform through his committee and the House. John Roberts seemed headed for easy confirmation to Sandra Day O'Connor's seat on the Supreme Court. Iraq, at least in the minds of administration officials, was moving in the right direction, with new Iraqi security forces coming online and the constitution heading for approval in the election scheduled for Oct. 15.

Hadean's predictions for the end of next week:

1)Fitzgerald will eventually threaten to tie himself to the WH fence for attention.

2)Miers will be a one line mention at the end MSM articles after the new SCOTUS nominee is announced.

3)Sheehan will be arrested again and no one will care.

4)Howard Dean will say something really stupid.

5)A liberal will threaten to move to Canada.

GWB goes from conservative goat to conservative icon

What about the North American Union and illegal immigration? What about the FTAA? His brother Jeb is counting on the FTAA to pass, which means he is counting on the western hemispheric integration that will create a borderless zone like the EU, and like the EU will end up with its own constitution, one without a pesky Bill of Rights.

I have never encountered Umgud before this thread.

If Umgud was "banned" last night, then why does he/she appear on this thread? Who banned him/her? And, what does that mean?

I am so new to Free Republic that I really have not yet earned friends or enemies. That will come in time, I am sure. There is real potential, for example, to make an enemy or two on this very thread.

Cheers! caryatid

You're waiting?

Fighting the good fight against the muslim horde notwithstanding...

In what ways is GWB less conservative than Reagan?

Don't get me wrong... I don't question Ronnie's conservatism. But all things happen in the universe of the possible, in the priorities of the times.

The borders have been the problem they are... for how many presidents now? [since Washington?] Congress has been in deficit spending mode for how many presidents? [Since Roosevelt's New Deal?] Sure... there's some things that need fixed. But they aren't new things.

The new things, and frankly, the priorities of the moment, are presented by the very real barbarians at the gate. There is a muslim horde out there that really sincerely wants us dead. This President, and thankfully him and not the last couple of contenders... has faced that enemy and taken action. The right action.

Who knows ... it's very late here and I may have picked up the name from another post on my ping list.

Whoever umgud is ... he probably feels about as welcome on this thread as I do.

G'night, All

I agree.

This Fritz hack should be the last straw.

From Libby's testimony

From Libby's testimony.

"I want – I didn't want to – I didn't know if it was true and I didn't want people – I didn't want the reporters to think it was true because I said it. I – all I had was that reporters are telling us that, and by that I wanted them to understand it wasn't coming from me and that it might not be true. Reporters write things that aren't true sometimes, or get things that aren't true. So I wanted to be clear they didn't, they didn't think it was me saying it. I didn't know it was true and I wanted them to understand that. Also, it was important to me to let them know that because what I was telling them was that I don't know Mr. Wilson. We didn't ask for his mission. That I didn't see his report."

"Basically, we didn't know anything about him until this stuff came out in June. And among the other things, I didn't know he had a wife. That was one of the things I said to Mr. Cooper. I don't know if he's married. And so I wanted to be very clear about all this stuff that I didn't, I didn't know about him. And the only thing I had, I thought at the time, was what reporters are telling us."

What Libby is saying is that he lied to reporters. He never says he didn't know Valaries status. He simply says that reporters were reporting this. Russert now lies and claims he didn't say this to Libby but that is simply his word against Libby. Read this Libby seems to be going out of his way to make clear that he did not take responsibility himself for this claim. Rather he attributed it to Russet. Fitz is so partisan though that he twist the denial into Libby denying knowledge rather than Libby denying this to other reporters.

This is a real partisan hack job. The G Wimp Bush had better grow some b@ll& and veto this spending bill until the cut's come about. He must demand that similar crimes by DemocRATS be prosecuted to the furtherest extent of the law. This would be the end of McDermmot, Hillary, Bill, Kerry, Dean and many other DemocRATS. He must demand that Able Danger be made fully public. Otherwise he might as well kiss his @&& goodbye as the DemocRATS will continue to pick us off one by one. How many do we lose to false charges before we learn?????.

You know... I was with you until this tirade came outta nowhere.

G Wimp Bush? Yah know... President Bush might be accused of many things, but wimpiness is simply not among them from either side.

FWIW ... this Scooter Libby indictment is as serious as it can be. Mr. Libby is not a particularly sympathetic figure. He represented Marc Rich.

The great danger of this situation is that I fear Libby was indicted in an effort to get him to "turn" ... and it is Dick Cheney they are really after ...

There can be no doubt that the intent is to bring down this administration. That is a lot more serious than who may or may not have been banned last night from Free Republic.
