(Cedar Rapids – KCRG) -- A grand jury met once again Thursday at the Federal Courthouse in Cedar Rapids. People questioned during the hearing said they were asked about Casey Frederiksen. Frederiksen is the fiancé of Noel Miller. Miller is the mother of five-year-old Floyd County murder victim Evelyn Miller.

Evelyn's father Andy Christie testified before the grand jury along with his brother, Jeremiah Christie. "They just asked about Casey's drug use and his computer," Jeremiah Christie said.

A different grand jury questioned Jeremiah about Frederiksen's computer last month. That grand jury indicted Frederiksen for possessing more than one thousand child pornography images and movies. Jeremiah says he was asked similar questions about Frederiksen at Thursday's grand jury hearing. "I felt like I was repeating myself a lot I mean they just asked me more about what I knew about computers they told me they're not investigating me and they weren't investigating me- of course I didn't have anything to do with this," Jeremiah Christie said.

Even though the grand jury appears to be targeting Frederiksen, the Christie family says they still stand by him. "We've always been a friend of Casey. We still support him. He hasn't had a trial. He hasn't had a chance to have his lawyers speak for him," Richard Christie, Evelyn's Grandfather, said.

Jeremiah Christie said, "Casey's my friend and I've gone through a lot with Casey. My heart tells me Casey's not involved but then again your heart can always be deceived."

Evelyn's grandmother, Linda Christie says she thinks prosecutors should also press child pornography charges against Noel Miller.

"The one thing that bothers me since they both knew what was on that computer is why is Casey in jail, and Noel is not charged with child pornography also," Linda Christie said.

The Christies say they think about Evelyn every day.

And, they're confident investigators are doing a good job.

"I think within a fairly short amount of time it will come to an end and we'll see someone arrested or indicted, that's what we're looking forward to," Richard Christie said.

Linda Christie said, "She's been gone for four months. This is a hard time for me because it's trick or treat time, and there's going to be one less trick or treater out there. That's hard for me to handle."

The Christies say even though Evelyn is dead, she will always live on in their hearts. Casey Frederiksen's father also testified before the grand jury today.

Remember this grand jury hearing is separate from the murder investigation. Prosecutors have not charged anyone in connection to Evelyn Miller's murder.

Evelyn's mother, Noel, has always said she raised her daughter in a loving, supportive home.

Miller family back in court

By Jessica Miller, For The Globe Gazette

CHARLES CITY — Two separate court proceedings took place involving the family of a murdered Floyd girl Thursday.

Evelyn Miller’s father, Andrew Christie, and uncle Jeremiah Christie testified before a federal grand jury Thursday in Cedar Rapids.

In the afternoon, Noel Miller, Evelyn’s mother, and Casey Frederiksen’s relatives met in the Floyd County Courthouse for a dispositional hearing in a child-in-need-of-assistance filing for Evelyn Miller’s half brothers.

Evelyn Miller, 5, was found dead July 6 after vanishing from her home July 1. Her mother, Noel Miller, reported her missing after working a night shift at a nursing home in Nashua. Noel Miller’s then live-in boyfriend, Casey Frederiksen, and the couple’s two sons were sleeping.

Andrew Christie, Evelyn’s father of Waterloo, and his brother Jeremiah Christie of Windsor Heights arrived at the federal courthouse around 1 p.m. Thursday.

Andrew Christie declined to comment on what questions he was asked. Noel Miller said Thursday that she was also at the grand jury Thursday morning and said she didn’t want to talk about it.

Grand juries are secret proceedings. In September, a grand jury chose to indict Frederiksen for possession of child pornography. He remains held in the Linn County Jail on the charges. Conviction would carry a punishment of up to 10 years in prison.

The hearing regarding Miller’s younger sons was closed to the public at the request of attorneys.

Dedra Schroeder, an attorney representing Noel, and Floyd County Attorney Marilyn Dettmer asked that the judge close the courtroom shortly after the hearing began.

Judge Gerald Magee granted the request and took notice of a prior decision to close the courtroom in the same case, because it was in the best interest of the children. He also reminded people present that he ordered them not to discuss the proceedings.

Miller’s acquaintance Jasper Clay, Charles City, waited outside the courtroom. He said he was subpoenaed to be at the courthouse at 1 p.m. He was never called into the courtroom. Later Dettmer told him that he was free to leave.

The children were removed from Miller’s care on July 12. They were found to be children in need of assistance in August.

That seems reasonable.
