I know what you're thinking. Is it on an X chromospme or a Y chromosome? Frankly in all the excitment I've lost count myself, so you gotta ask yourself, 'Do I feel lkuy?' Well do you pnuk?

Up to a fifth of dyslexia cases could becaused by a faulty version of a gene called DCDC2, scientists believe. Translation: We don't really know anything; please give us more money.

Translation: We don't really know anything; please give us more money. Some other researcher was making waves by claiming dyslexia wasn't a neuro/psychological condition in the sense that other mental disabilities are, but it was pounded into the disability category 'cuz that's where the funding is.

I've read of studies that demonstrate that many incidences of "dyslexia" are caused (big surprise!) by the wrong kind of reading instruction. I assume, as with so many other popular "disorders," that there are many different conditions lumped under the same heading, with a variety of different causative factors, some inborn and some environmental.
It's even possible that the genetic correlation discussed in this article has something to do with some people's difficulties in reading. Who knows? Obviously the researchers don't know, or the one line of description wouldn't have included three sets of weasel-words!

dyslexia" are caused (big surprise!) by the wrong kind of reading instruction. The other way around. The wrong type of reading instruction leaves the dyslexic without the ability to read.
Whole language, invented and experimented on in California, is a disaster for dyslexics who require phonetic instruction. My own theory is that the NEA embraced "whole language" (and then dropped it when California went from1st to 50th in rweading scores) for two reasons:
1) its easier for teachers to teach; you just read to the class and
2) it works better on girls than boys since most dyslexics are boys and poorer in reading in the early stages of life
