Surely you must be joking, I would never stoop so low as to call you a democrat! No worries, dogs are ok, if you like that sort of thing. Dogs have masters, cats have slaves....

Oh, and don't call me Shirley....

I like some of the changes, I'm disappointed that the system is going to a default of eastern time. It was refreshing to have something on the net that recognized that not all is eastern.

John, on the original (maybe version 2) of the forum software before paging existed I used to regularly load up 500 plus comment pages.

Yeah, 500 should be no sweat, probably 1,000 even. I'm concerned about the 65,000 comment threads we get on occassion. I know that would sink most browsers.

Fixed number of comments. No more than 50 comments per page will be shown. Your preference of 20, 100 or 250 is going to be ignored. I know this is a bit of a heartbreak for some, I understand it is a sacrifice. There are very good and very strong reasons this is changing.

No matter I guess, I'm just one poster. I miss a lot of stuff though, when posters talk back, and I only see 20 responders to many theads. Many may think I don't care enough to read and respond, perhaps and that's not so. I only see 20 now, though. That's the part I don't get.

I have an idea about how you might be able to cache threads that would serve up active topics without killing the server.

Break them into 50 reply chunks until they reach 200 or 250 replies. At that point create cached pages every 200 or 250 replies. Then under user options (or maybe on the thread itself) you have an option to serve up large pages (for people who have broad band).

I'm thinking that people who want smaller pieces will probably not go past 4 or 5 page loads anyway (if they want to go beyond that they may have to take a big page), and people who are going to skim or read the large threads will get them served up much faster without so much stress on the DB.

Does this make sense to you?

The problem: because the pages differ they would have to be on different URLs. Because the pages are on different URLs, the forum, topic, and keyword pages would have to use different URLs depending on your preference. But, I want to make those cachable too. So they too would have to be on different URLs. There would be stacks of different URLs to the same place. Not good.

Furthermore, what happens when somebody links an article. They're going to have to link to either the 50 or the 250 version. They'll probably link to whatever their preference is. Now, when somebody else follows that link they may have a different preference. They're used to seeing 250 comments, but they click a link to a 50-sizer and only get 50. That's confusing.

Perhaps there are enhancements I can make that have nothing to do with the number of comments returned that can bring similar benefits. One such idea previously mentioned was saving articles to disk. Well, I can provide a link for 500 or 1,000 comments for that purpose. For speed, I can prefetch the next page of comments, so that you can read while the browser is downloading (into it's cache) the next page. Clicking next would be instant. Etc.

Handheld devices are to become ubiquitous in the not too distant future. I am certain of that. In five or ten years it will be common to only have Internet access on your phone or perhaps some Internet-purposed hand-held terminal. I want to ensure FR is future compatible for this coming age. These devices don't have a lot of screen, memory, CPU or bandwidth, but they're catching on. WebTV is a great place to test such a future compatible site, it's all those things.

I guess I threw you a curve. "Your latest diary entry:" referred to the CAT'S diary! I was merely adding to the cat's memoirs. Call it cat-speak. The cat's the one with the problem, not me.

When you observe a human being carrying a pooper-scooper and a plastic bag as they walk their dog, which one looks like the slave?

OK, no more cat and dog fights...live and let live.

BTW, your cat versus dog post was quite funny.

Quoting your, "Don't call me Shirley", where the h_ll did THAT come from, Shirley? Oops, I mean Bush_Democrat.

Speaking for myself, I really resist that. I need a larger screen and larger type. I really don't like itty-bitty screens and keypads.
