As a right wing atheist (objectivist), I dont see too much social conservative dominance of the Republican Party. Sure, Im on the outside, but thats inevitable. The party hasnt left me behind.

No. Seriously, why would someone want to be part of a party that doesn't want them.
Ask the jews that.. I mean they keep voting Dem despite its pro-terror positions on everything !

"Nothing is more dangerous than religion in politics and government when it becomes divisive," he said. "I'll give you examples: Iraq. Northern Ireland. Palestine."
For this guy to compare the political situation in this country to these examples is despicable and over the top.

I'm an Evangelical, Christian and a conservative.

He's an Episcopalian. Explains everything. Social liberals eventually morph into fiscal liberals too, and then what's the difference between them and leftist DemocratsI don't think Danforth is a "social liberal", he did stand for Clarence Thomas, remember?
As for fiscal liberals, arn't the Republicans half way there now? Spending money like it's a bridge to nowhere! LOL!
To: jern
Danforth is arachic fossil from the days when the Republicans were in a permanent minority. That's exactly where the Republicans would still be if Danforth and his ideas were the basis for Republican party platform.
Bush owes his second term to religious conservatives that turned out in record numbers in the last election. Karl Rove's strategy was find a way to motivate the four million Christian conservatives that stayed away from the ballot boxes in 2000 to turn out in 2004. The strategy was a correct one.

"And Danforth is an ordained minister! Bravo! " And so is that little Christian-hater that heads up the "Separation of Church and State" group that completely distorts what that actually means.
Being "ordained", especially in certain mainline religions today, means virtually nothing. It's only good for giving credibility when they take off-the-wall liberal stands on things, just like when a Republican senator criticizes the President he's considered suddenly worth listening to.

I have issues with the Episcopal Chruch and their recent left-ward tilt but I don't think it's fair to say that he's not a Christian.
And don't forget "Rev." Jackson is a pentecostal. I mean the leadership/self appointed spokespeople of ALL denominations are generally pro whatever is fashionable at the times.

Now I've *heard* that the Christian Conservative vote in the GOP was only around 20 per cent...therefore, not a big deal.
Certain people on this thread (and the former Senator) however, see the C.C. vote in the GOP as a huge problem.
Which is it?
Where did all this worry about Biblical conservatives come from? I've been here a while and I've only noticed it more recently.

Oh, yeah. Danforth thinks it's bad for Christians to be involved in politics.
That's obvious, isn't it? After all, he put the finishing touches on the Davidian massacre.

Nonsense. Everyone believes something, and those beliefs guide their actions.
This is a slur against religion, and it's an embarassment for the speaker and his supporters.

Really? Just a couple of black leaders is all I can figure out, why dont you point out the leaders of other religions so that we may have a clear and concise view of your opinion.

Fortunately Danforth is not the Republican Party although those of his kind do occupy the "country club" wing.
Their job is to sit still, keep their mouths shut, and pay! All the others win the elections.
Too true. LOL. When we want his opinion we'll give it to him.
