Since the 1980s, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has done an excellent job of bringing obnoxious pork barrel spending to our attention, but it looks like they have some serious competition these days. Republican Senators are beating CAGW to the punch by issuing press releases promoting their own pork.
Within 24 hours of voting on the TTHUD appropriations bill, Republican Senators rushed to issued press releases proudly taking credit for allocating our money to their earmarked projects. No effort is being made to cut spending in order to finance the federal money needed for hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Senators Frist and Alexander issued a joint press release touting eight projects totaling more than $20 million, including:
$750,000 for the City of Clinton to renovate the Green McAdoo Cultural Center.
Senator Hatch's press release itemized almost $21 million in earmarks. In his press release he comments on $600,000 for the Provo Community Arts Center by quoting himself:
Utah County has sought for years to have a high-quality arts center to host community and national theater and performing arts, Hatch said. This funding will help start making this dream a reality: a permanent home for the arts in Provo.

Thanks guys! You're serving conservatives just the way we wanted you to.
Gridlock would be better than this.
Pandercrats.
My Republican senator (Allard) voted FOR the Coburn amendment. He will get my vote if he chooses to run again.
First time I've heard that. Nice.
It's not nice to come around here rubbing it in our faces while the rest of us our miserable with our own unprincipled Republicans.
Words just can't describe. Our money being wasted! I'd love to see all of these Senators who do this unemployed if they are unwilling to take back this sh1t and apologize to all of us.
hahahahahahahahaha....stop! I am dieing here.
So we have lost jobs in the economy and taxpayers are subsidizing employment made possible by Senators. That is not real job creation.
You don't get roads and such named after you if you do that.
GOP Senators will be in the minority by 2008.
When you name roads after elected officials, that's the kind of people you get running for office. Rather a bit of a quandry, wouldn't you say?
Then, when the pork comes, the President should go on TV and tell us he's vetoing it, and then tell us about the $230 million bridge to an island with 30 people on it. You could give each of them a million dollars to move into a mansion on the mainland and save 200 million. He should rattle off the 10 worst pork project from each party.
Are you holding your breath? I would breathe if I were you. ;)
Sorry.
I was sort of trying to let everyone know that there ARE a few (very few) Republicans holding high office who are capable of adhering to principle.
But if it makes you feel any better my "Republican" governor is siding with the forces in our state attempting to gut the taxpayer bill of rights amendment that was passed in the early 90's. Rather than deal with spending they want a "temporary" suspension of TABOR so they can get their hands on our money to fund such vital projects as an art museum in Teluride. If they don't get their way they are threatening to cut back on fire and police protection.
Maybe naming roads and such like after politicians should be like stamps. You have to be dead 5 years before any naming.
Hannity just ripped them a new one on his show. Said we might as well be voting for Ted Kennedy.
