WASHINGTON—The federal prosecutor investigating the alleged involvement of White House officials in the leak of a CIA operative's identity spent most of the lunch hour today meeting with the chief judge of the federal district court in the nation's capital, Judge Thomas Hogan.

As reporters massed outside an elevator lobby leading to the grand jury rooms, the special prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, apparently slipped out a back exit to conduct the noontime meeting with Judge Hogan.

Mr. Fitzgerald declined to comment as he and a colleague emerged from the judge's chambers just before 1 p.m.

The prosecutor's visit to the chief judge could signal that Mr. Fitzgerald is seeking to extend the term of the grand jury that has been investigating the leak. Judge Hogan would need to approve any extension to the grand jury's term, which was set to expire on Friday....

Exactly, he could have just said, we're shutting this down at noon tomorrow as well as I need more time.

No matter what he does, the MSM will write a thousand words about their wishes and dreams for this WH and expect us to take it a fact, not fiction.

This guy is all over the place today. Before he was at Rove's lawyers office, now he is meeting with the judge.

My thought: maybe he offered a deal to Rove's lawyer, Rove's lawyer told him to "get stuffed", now he's shopping around for more time.

Next headline we'll see: Prosecutor Meets With Butcher, Could Signal that Fitzgerald Is Seeking a Salami on Rye. News at 11 PM.

This whole thing has begun to become a SNL skit. I only hope that the investigation hasn't been a complete waste of time, but it appears to be the case.

When I read that FBI agents were conducting last minute interviews with neighbors of Plame I thought, Mmmmm, he's going to ask for an extension, these aren't LAST MINUTE kind of actions. Why? Because the investigation is moving on the the real meat - Miller, Plame, Wilson and the CIA. THAT will take time.

This does not mean ANYTHING. The Chief Judge and Fitz are most likely just touching base, probably more a social visit such as "So, you'll be heading back to Chicago on Monday huh?. Well I enjoyed working with you. Going to do some of that fishing you were telling me about...."

yes, me too. It's called lunch....

Perhaps, but don't you think it is suspicious that they are eating lunch between noon and 1pm, lunchtime.

"If that a@@hole can't figure it out by now, he is one of the most lame prosecutors in history." There's two possibilities to this... 1- the Fitz ain't got nothing and is asking advice on closure, OR....

2 Fitz is in the FIX with the RATS! The longer the RATS prolong this, the more chances the LIES and mudslinging at W's administration will stick!!

Believe me, plenty of folks in town knew this one. They also knew she was working a desk at Langley for years...and not on station overseas.

Doesn't he have to get the ok from the judge to write a report? Or release a report or some such thing?

"I had understood that it has to be all 12 to vote for indictment. Anyone know if that is correct?"

I don't know either. What are they going to indict except perjury? By mt reckoning the 'Outing' of Plame was a fact long before the Niger trip by her husband was arranged and she hadn't even been covert for years longer than a statute would mandate protection of her status.
