KINGSVILLE - Representatives from the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, the Contra Minutemen Coalition and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund exchanged heated words Tuesday night at a forum on border issues at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
Accusations of racism, false rhetoric and illegal activity dominated the forum.
Mike Chavez, chair of the Contra Minutemen Coalition, said the Minuteman group feeds on racist fears.
"They are racist and vigilante groups because their own leaders have said they are," Chavez said. Some of their rhetoric, he said, includes a warning against a "brown invasion."
"It's not a racist issue," said Al Garza, president of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps of Texas. "It's a question of safety and laws."
Luis Figueroa, analyst and staff attorney with MALDEF, said the minutemen only serve to exacerbate an already volatile situation.
"It's the equivalent of using lemon juice to cure a paper cut," Figueroa said. "The minutemen have created more problems than they have solved."
Brooks County rancher and minutemen supporter M.L. Vickers said the organization's motive is to protect their own land. He said he has seen the steady stream of immigrants crossing his land change during the 20 years he's lived there.
"Over the past five years things have gotten out of control," Vickers said.
He said 1,000 to 2,000 immigrants cross his land every night.
Garza said the organization follows the law, while protecting public safety and national security. His group said they only observe and report.
Figueroa said he understands the frustration of property owners, but that he and his organization advocate immigration reform through the federal government.
"We support comprehensive immigration reform where immigrants can come in and have a path to residency," Figueroa said.

What about the terroristas, drug smugglers, and slavers Figueroa?
I support defending our borders at a time of war. This is the single biggest issue for 2006 and 2008. And I think it gives Newt, at least an opportunity to earn the GOP nomination.
"We support comprehensive immigration reform where immigrants can come in and have a path to residency," Figueroa said.

Let's be more accurate -- what you support is CONTINUED ILLEGAL, UNRESTRICTED INVASION OF THIS COUNTRY. That is what you want. No problem, just call the Oval Office for whatever you need.
Better yet.
How about the 'immigrants' just crossing at the 'legal' checkpoints?
No. That would be to easy!
One of these people murdered the others. Can you pick the murderer and tell me what country they were from?
Just call Jorge, 24/7....he delivers!
MM Ping!
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off this South Texas/Mexico ping list.
I got news for you Figueroa...
JUST THIS MORNING..one of them so-called guest workers came in "lookin' for a yob"..so we gave him an application.
During the interview..the fellow interrupted the question period by holding a paper out and shaking it..saying we had to sign it to prove he had "looked for a YOB"
Well! It was a form for UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS.
The boss asked him..Do you want to work..or do you just want that State check? The Mex actually answered that he wanted the check..said we HAD to sign the paper.
Of course, we refused..it angered him..he left..in his 2001 Chevy F-10 Peek-up!
Yeah..they are coming over here to work MY DONKEYS BUTT!!!
Mike Chavez, chair of the Contra Minutemen Coalition, said the Minuteman group feeds on racist fears.
Sounds like a bad case of projection, to me. Isn't that what the pro-illegal alien group does in order to keep their base riled up?
"Keep calling the Gringo a racist, and we'll make sure you get all the Government goodies you've got coming to you. Oh, and by the way, we need another donation."
I've got news for the GOP..my extra cash goes to the Minuteman Project.
See my #9
Ahh, poor baby, are we upsetting your apple-cart?
Good.
It's unfortunate that groups wanting to keep criminals out of this country are accused of racism - it helps to make accusations of racism meaningless and people are likely to dismiss it even in legitimate cases.
"We support comprehensive immigration reform where immigrants can come in and have a path to residency," Figueroa said. This said apparently without any trace of ironic inflection. As if the border-crossers have a right to be residents. And notice how Fig never said they wanted to become citizens. Citizenship implies responsibility as well as priviledge.
The summary: the illegals have a right to cross the border at will and live and work in the USA, but don't want to become citizens, while US citizens have no right to keep illegals off their privately held land.
That such arguments are not deemed ludicrous by all men everywhere is itself ludicrous.
That was classic! My sister had a similar thing happen to her...an illegal came in to get paperwork signed because she wanted the Baby Insurance...you know, the insurance so she wouldn't have to pay the $5000 in cash to have her baby born in a hospital in Phoenix.
Sis ran her out.
More of us in the position to do so..should begin CALLING THEIR BLUFF. Every time.
United States Citizens are tiring of the unconstitutional merging of Mexico with the USA..and our Government would do best........to listen.
Did you call immigration with his license number?
Just..damn! I did not think of it. The guy had a "Green Card" though..and we took a copy
BTW..there was NO EXPIRATION date on his "temporary workers permit"....I will be questioning THAT
I'm sickened. I've got definite "Fight or Flight" feelings at this moment...one of these days the majority of our population will feel the same way on the same day...then we'll see what our panty-waisted politicians are gonna do.
Outstanding post.
