Speaking of pushing buttons, I think I had a comment removed by moderator on another thread. My second in all these years.

Is it a no-no to call someone gay?

Some idiot (maybe that's a no-no too) posted the question, "why isn't a 50 year old woman married?" relative to you know who.

I immediately responded, "because you're gay."

I was trying to be funny. I so often fail in that attempt one would think I'd give it up.

I saw that. And the original question does have a whiff of sexism to it.

Here's my take on this situation...

Right now, no matter what, we have to avoid even the appearance of calling others names. In a different time or place, that would probably not have gotten pulled. But as it stands, each side is really tender from all the body blows and therefore hypersensitive.

It does none of us any good to demonize the other people in this fight. We are all on the same team, like it or not, and will need each other for fights against our common enemies later on.

What I advise is to stick with principles and facts. For instance, I was upset with some anti-Miers people today because they took an old article, posted an excerpt and tried to imply it showed just how vapid and social climbing Miers was.

It only took looking deeper into it to realize that it was from April and had been completely taken out of context. That is a fact and stays away from personal insults. If they have legitimate arguments against Miers, and admittedly there are some genuine concerns, they must present all evidence fairly, even that which might go against their position.

That goes for Miers supporters as well. There is something vaguely discomforting about the personal notes that are part of the record. For me to not admit that would not be fair. (I will state here, again for the record, that I am undecided on Miers. I have concerns. But even if I end up disagreeing with the President on this issue, I fully acknowledge his right to appoint whomever he wishes and will support him on that.)

Anyway, stuff gets misinterpreted all the time. I wouldn't worry too much...just learn from it and go on. Oh, and never give up on being funny! That is my favorite part of Free Republic.
