George Soros, the financier who made his fortune playing chicken with governments on the world's financial markets, found himself on the receiving end of a state attack on Thursday when he went on trial in Paris for insider trading.
Prosecutors allege he took advantage of inside information in 1988 to make £7 million buying and selling in the French bank Societe Generale.
As the case was laid out against him, Soros stretched his legs, adjusted his earpiece and smoothed his tie, with no hint of first-day nerves. At the end of the opening session, he said: "I am confident I will be acquitted.
"I have been implicated by accident. I learned a lot about Societe Generale today that I never knew before."
I believe he was convicted, but given a slap on the wrist fine. Why? It took 10 yrs. to bring this to trial. What arrangements were made with Chirac? And what arrangements did Chirac possibly make with Wilson?
