Junk Lawsuits: Congress passed legislation to protect law-abiding gun makers from unscrupulous trial lawyers. But will gun rights supporters shield themselves from the demagoguery that's going to be fired at them?

Last week's passage of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which President Bush will soon sign, is sure to be exploited in next year's congressional campaigns.

But this time those who think guns and not criminals are the problem will have a harder time getting voters to swallow their disinformation. That's because Americans have seen on their TV screens what the much-maligned National Rifle Association has been pointing out for years: Guns in the hands of noncriminals saves lives.

The public sector may have let down the citizens of New Orleans in its rescue and relief efforts. But many of the stranded residents of the Big Easy learned there was something they could count on in their time of need — their privately owned firearms. TV viewers saw images of hurricane victims living in a state of lawless chaos, unable to depend on the police, and they saw them defend their families and their property with guns.

Significantly, the legislation drew support from Democrats in both chambers. But it shouldn't have taken a calamity like Katrina to make a remedy like this popular.

Routinely in this country, a working woman, say, will leave work and walk to her car in a dark parking lot and find herself confronted by an assailant. If she can simply produce a handgun, it could save her from theft, injury, rape or worse.

All law-abiding Americans should be allowed to exercise the right to protect themselves with a gun if they so choose. And those who make and sell those instruments of protection should not be penalized for their service.

Naturally, insurers...

Measures like these may lead to a refreshing new trend just in time for an election year — holding individuals responsible for their own actions instead of posing as anti-crime crusaders and finding some business to serve as scapegoat.

One of the things criminals most like to do is evade moral responsibility for their crimes. Gun grabbers give them a perfect out--"I wouldn't have done it if the evil gun hadn't been there." In so doing the whole gun grabbing movement promotes crime by preventing the criminals from acknowledging their own moral responsibility for their acts and changing those actions due to such recognition of moral responsibility.

The Dism have known since '94 that the gun issue was killing them. They've finally muzzled the anti-gunners in their orbit. In 2004, the gungrabbers were reduced to pleading and begging the Dim pols to believe that they wouldn't be defeated for taking an anti-gun stance. They could hardly find a Dim in the whole country to advocate more gun-control.

The real problem for the Brady Bunch in coming years will be just to hold on to the gun prohibitions they already have in place. Especially in places like California and New York.
