I don't think she ever fed upon or profited from her celebrity.

That's enough to earn respect in any event. I may not agre with everything she said, but I can respect her courage.

In other words, the real deal...

"I don't think she ever fed upon or profited from her celebrity."

Someone who did something because it was right, not because there was a news crew nearby.

Those who use her name (in vain, mostly) might profit by her example.

True, poignant observation.

You're right. Others did. They exploited her for their own agenda. Thats the pity of it all, she never once came out and opposed their destroying her name. Nice what she did. Shame how it turned out.

No, she did not. And she also did not use her position for partisan purposes. She sent a letter to J.C. Watts asking him not to leave Congress, wanting blacks holding office in both parties.

Most civil rights heroes don't. In fact, quite the opposite, in some instances. Consider Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcom X.

Both died as a result of their "celebrity", for lack of a better word. :-/

It's only fitting that someone with Ms. Parks' spark and "spunk" possesses such longevity and live to see age 92. May she rest well.
