Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will face real questions from real voters tonight as he defends his special election efforts in a televised town hall meeting in Walnut Creek.
State Sen. Don Perata, D-Oakland, and Rose Ann DeMoro, executive director of the California Nurses Association, will provide the opposition in the 90-minute event, which will be shown live on KTVU beginning at 6 p.m.

While Schwarzenegger has been stumping the state for his initiatives, most of his appearances have been limited to handpicked crowds of friendly supporters or calls to conservative radio talk show hosts. But in a state where Democrats and independents make up more than 60 percent of the registered voters, the governor has to reach beyond his GOP allies to have a chance of winning on Nov. 8.

It's an opportunity Schwarzenegger's political team has been unwilling to take advantage of in the past, preferring to put the governor out of the reach -- and far from the questions -- of the protesters who have dogged his steps since late last year.

There have been plenty of tradeoffs in the negotiations with the governor's team. Schwarzenegger, for example, refused to share the stage with Perata and DeMoro, which means they'll appear and take questions in separate segments. And while KTVU wanted to offer the event to stations around California, "we couldn't get everyone to agree,'' De Wolk said.
But Schwarzenegger and his opponents agreed the audience of 300 people at Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts would be chosen to represent the entire Bay Area and be kept free of partisan boosters from the campaigns.
