BY THOMAS M. DeFRANK DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF

WASHINGTON - Facing the darkest days of his presidency, President Bush is frustrated, sometimes angry and even bitter, his associates say.

With a seemingly uncontrollable insurgency in Iraq, the White House is bracing for the political fallout from a grim milestone that could come any day: the combat death of the 2,000th American G.I.

Last week alone, 23 military personnel were killed in Iraq, and five were wounded yesterday in a relentless series of attacks across the country.

This week could also bring a special prosecutor's decision that could shake the foundations of the Bush government.

The President's top political guru, Karl Rove, and Vice President Cheney's right-hand man, Lewis (Scooter) Libby, are at the center of a two-year criminal probe into the leak of a CIA agent's identity. Many Bush staffers believe indictments are likely.

"He's like the lion in winter," observed a political friend of Bush. "He's frustrated. He remains quite confident in the decisions he has made. But this is a guy who wanted to do big things in a second term. Given his nature, there's no way he'd be happy about the way things have gone."

Yes he doesn't go out to the people as Reagan did.

But who could or can today.

Reagan was a 1 in a million and in today's politics of personal destruction we don't get the best people anymore due to the sins of the Past.

That is where our 24/7 fling chit news so called reporting has gotten US, in a far worse place.

Bush's perennial smirk is a constant reminder that he is convinced of his superiority.

Perennial references to a smirk are constant reminders of the shallowness and insecurity of the opposition.

And we are all just background noise.

The dirty little secret is that The Prez is a snob from a family of snobs.

It's not enough to target the man, to really trash his character you gotta go after his family too!

Where was the party for the 2000th "freedom fighter" killed in action?

There are many, many parties planned, if you can believe the commies.

Check here and here for examples.

How did you comment from DU get posted on FR???

When did it become necessary to be a FReeper and a True Believer? The man has flaws, great, gaping ones. He is also the most important and effective president in 50 years.

For one that finds Bushbotism a serious lack of political acumen like myself, I too, find Bush to have flaws, like actually being a conservative like Reagan, but your comment was personal and untrue.

The man is not a snob nor from a family of snobs. Kerry is a true blue snob of snobs.

...smirk...that he is convinced of his superiority

Spoken like a DU'er. The only thing a true DU'er would have included is a reference to a chimp

If anything I find this man to be be humble, actually too humble

In the end he will be like you said the most important President in the next 50 years or more.

Once again, we have leftist media reading the minds of unnamed sources to tell readers what the prez is thinking and how he feels. Wish I could read minds of leftists, but it isn't really necessary--they fully explain why they are morons.

The man is brilliant but deeply flawed.

Seems like the only kind of person who runs for President.

So who would you have preferred in the presidency after all--Gore or Kerry? Hey, Bush is our guy, like it or not, and he has done a lot of very good things. Tell me which prez made no mistakes. Are you just another DU troll? Sounds like it. Your erroneous spelling of Reagan's name is a tell. Also, he has turned to the people for support. Did you forget all of his public meetings to try to get Social Security fixed and others to gain support for the military? Have you ever heard or read his speeches? Guess not.

He does not fight back hard enough nor does he take his case to the American people nearly often enough.

Absolutely correct.

The dirty little secret is that The Prez is a snob from a family of snobs. He does not believe, as did Reagen, in the power of the people

Or maybe he realizes that most of us don't need to be reassured constantly. Reagen had a high opinion of the American people and so does Bush, maybe too high in some cases.

I saw him beat Laura to an inch of her life," said one anonymous source, "I even called an ambulance."

You are correct.

Reagan did not have to contend with the 24 hour news cycle. That has changed everything and we have no way of knowing what it would have been like for him.

AND what we also forget is how angry and frustrated conservatives where with him in his second term. They talked about how brilliant he was in his first term but how he had gone weak and sold out their cause. His second term was plagued with scandal. He was out of touch and isolated, surrounded by a group of yes men. He was distracted and irritable.

Sound familiar? In any case, a man (or a President) can not be judged outside the context of his times. It just isn't right or even truly possible.

Deeply flawed is the nature of humanity.

I believe that President Bush understands that about himself and spends a great deal of time on his knees asking for Divine guidance.

As far as I am concerned, I would rather have one that realizes he is deeply flawed, than one who believes "the other guy is deeply flawed." That dynamic was definitely on display in the last election.
