Russia also won Cold War, says Gorbachev
The Australian ^

WASHINGTON: The US and Russia had both emerged victorious at the end of the Cold War, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said.

"I would not be making a mistake to say that perestroika won. It succeeded," he said during a celebration of the 20th anniversary of reforms that ultimately ended the hostilities between the two nations.

Mr Gorbachev also reflected on the current state of world affairs, noting the role of the US as the sole superpower.

"America has a right to be a leader," he said, adding that "this leadership should be realised through partnership, not domination".

Former US president Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Colin Powell were among about 200 guests who attended what Mr Gorbachev described as a "meeting of old friends".

Mr Gorbachev is credited with engineering a series of reforms, called perestroika, in the Soviet Union that led to the fall of communism.

In 1990, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

"It was obvious from the beginning with perestroika blooming in Russia, there was a new openness, a new sense of freedom, there was a new leader," Mr Clinton said.

"He will go down in history as a person who changed the world for the better."

No, Bubba. You've got it wrong again: President Reagan did.

Gorbachev is universally despised in Russia. Most people still have fond thoughts about Brezhnev.

Western "intellectuals" are the only people stupid enough to believe this. Gorby's fellow-Russians know what he was about.

Gorby was charged with saving the old Soviet Union, but he failed. So, he's claiming failure was his strategy all along. And American liberals are dumb enough to buy it.

"Russia also won Cold War, says Gorbachev"

I agree, in the sense that Russia was able to infect American politics and culture with their socialist idealism without a single shot being fired. Soviet socialism even spread its corruption into our public schools and churches.

When you look around at how our government has burried religion under an avalanche of public prohibition laws, has elevated abortion to the status of "Constitutional RIGHT", and how the media have become the ally of socialists who seek to tear down the fabric of family values and traditional morality, it becomes apparent that Eugene McCarthy was a modern-day Prophet.

Gorby lives in San Francisco these days, where he is head of an environmentalist think tank.

Gorbachev was previously the dictator of a failing regime that maintained its tenuous grasp on power through desperate political repression. He is currently unemployed.

yea, exactly what we need now, a moskva man whose countrymen cant seem to be able to produce the rudiments of a modern society telling us who won the cold war and why. NOTE TO HIM, IT WAS STUD REAGAN, READ IT AND DIE OF COLD IN YOUR MISERABLE WINTERS. ronnie, wherever you are today, know well that many of us miss you dearly and appreciate all that you did for us, it will not be forgotten.

I see your stay here may be short.

If you have to ask that question then it's clear the answer will fly over your head.
