Really, we're past the point of legal immigration, too. The Immigration Era was the late 1800s, not now. Now we are nearing 300 million population. There is congestion everywhere. Immigration is driving house prices out of reach for most Americans. It's diminishing the middle class and reducing our standard of living. Let's put a stop to it.

But but... do you want to pay more for your asparagus?

We're hardly past the point for legal immigration. The problem is not immigration numbers but quality. Asinine programs which give preference to illegal immigrants, diversity lottery immigrants, family connections in this day of cheap airline travel ($200 for a ticket from Chicago to Mexico City, for crying out loud!) and other tweaks that have nothing to do with selecting quality should be aboloished.

On the other hand, quality immigrants who bring needed skills to our economy and make great American citizens should be encouraged. Our native population is not reproducing at replacement level nor are we turning out the numbers of graduates in science and math needed to maintain our competitive edge. Even countries like Singapore and Japan allow such targeted immigration and they are far more crowded than we are-- ever take a cross-country trip and seen just how much open space this country has got?
