Speaking of which: it is interesting to note that the land in question was originally stolen by the Bantus from the aboriginal Khoisan population.

The Khoisan populations are the First Nations people of South Africa (& much of sub Saharan Africa) & are now restricted to southern Namibia / western Bostwana (where the government is in fact trying to remove them!) / & the Northern Cape.

The language of a number of Khoisan groups is interestingly a dialect of Orange River Afrikaans. The Griquas & Basters are significantly descended from Khoisan ancestors & speak a form of this Afrikaans dialect. The Boers spoke a dialect of Eastern Border Afrikaans.

Speaking of the Boers: they did not steal the land they trekked northwards into as they trekked into mainly depopulated lands (due to the difiqane started by the Zulu King Shaka) & went out of their way to avoid the more densely populated areas -with the possible exception of the trekkers under the leadership of Piet Retief who were soon double crossed by Shaka & killed after obtaining what Retief thought was a treaty to settle a portion of land over the Drakensburg.

The Boers' method was always negotiation or purshase when dealing with land claims though most of the land they trekked into during the 1830s was empty due to the inter-tribal wars which began in the 1820s. The Boers though began to compromise their cultural ascendancy in the region when they began to employ some black refugees (from the aforementioned inter-tribal wars) as farm workers, but nothing destroyed Boer hegemony more then the discovery of gold on the Vaal which brought in not only many black mine workers from outside the region but also many foreign White people mainly English speakers.
