"Spiteful? I think right now that term is reserved for the extreme right wing who may have thwarted this nomination. What makes them think he's going to come back now and give them what they want? Very unlikely."

I agree. Some on the right have proven in the past few weeks that they have actually been the sworn enemies of the WH all along.

Question, if Miers is pulled, what's to stop her from coming out with how she would have ruled on Roe?

The detriment those so quick to have her pulled prematurely will be swift and painful.

The fact we care more about the background of a Supreme Court Judge than we do the President of the US is a very sad and scary thing.

I haven't seen anyone post a comment to that effect - can you direct me to the many posts that have led you to draw such a conclusion?

Seems to me if she is what her opponents here say she is, the democrats would be falling all over themselves to vote for her

Many of us think she is a moderate who will cave to the media and cocktail party circuit and turn liberal.

Many of them think she is a moderate who will cave to her president and turn conservative.

If you want to gamble go to a casino.

Bush can do better.

Send Laura on a vacation to India and fix this with a new highly qualified nominee with a clear history of strict constructionist rulings from the bench.

Then watch Chucky turn into a monster just in time for Halloween. :-)

I don't get much flak from people who are "waiting for more info."

The flack comes from those who agree with whatever Bush does.

The plurality in FR is opposed to this pick.

So you would prefer say, Lawrence Tribe to Harriet Miers?
Yes, I think so.
I don't believe that any liberal could do as much permanent damage to the future of the conservative legal establishment as an unskilled conservative advocate could.
I would rather give up the seat to a liberal for now than seat a conservative who will bring shame and disrepute on conservative judicial thought.

Oh, those high and mighty - unelected - high Priests and Priestesses of the Supreme Court. We should have a new Constitutional Convention, NOW.

WOW - Maybe President Bush can clone Ruth Buzzy Ginsberg.

Who cares what the plurality of Freepers think. This is an EXTREME conservative sight. Like it or not.

Harriet lost my support when I read somewhere that she supports killing puppies.

No, you've got that wrong -- it's kittens, not puppies.

Just like those extremists (and sexist elitists) like Laura Ingraham, Rush, Charles Krauthammer, Mark Steyn (who is hardly thrilled with Miers), George Will, National Review, John Fund, et al.

I guess to some anyone to the right of Arlen Specter is an "extremist."

Hmmmm, perhaps that is due to the fact they are "waiting for more info" as opposed to participating in this castigation of the President and the nominee.

There is no question that "if" there is another nominee, they will have better outward qualifications. But, plenty of questions remain about how much more outwardly conservative the next nominee will be.

The same dynamics that made a "stealth" nominee the choice this time around still exist, at least to some extent. All the people you mentioned either took a pass last time or were judged to be unconfirmable, a Meirs withdrawal does little to change that

I don't believe that's the case. I believe they are in the "yes" category.

People tend to forget...Politicians work for us, not the other way around.

I am loyal to principles, not men.

Whoever gets nominated has got to get a majority of the Senators, and I don't think there are enough conservatives to win an outright war over a conservative nominee.

Considering the fact that President Bush has recently been acting more like the RINO Senators you do not trust, maybe you need to reconsider who is at fault.

Yes, and anyone that has been on FR for more than a week are fully aware of the fact that there are many "pretend" conservatives here and DU plants.

Do you really believe you're going to get better, more accurate, and helpful information during a Senate Judiciary Committee dog and pony show, where the whole point is to lob the occasional carefully rehearsed and memorized zinger while avoiding saying anything of substance?

Indirectly, you might get a good idea about how well and quickly (or not) the nominee's mind works in a purely mechanical sense in an inquisitorial setting, but that's about it.
