I remember having a TV crew and a reporter along with us on one op. We were moving through a village. I was the platoon sergeant and as my troops moved through the ville I looked back and one of my troops was trying to use his zippo to set fire to one of the hootch's. I jumped his butt and asked him what the hell he was doing. He said the reporter told him to set the hooch afire. I put their asses on the next chopper that came in.

He complained to my chain of command and it went down hill from there until I explained to the colonel what had actually happened. Never heard anymore about it and we never took them on ops with us again.

Why would a troop take orders from a reporter?

Sounds like you busted Oliver Stone.
In Danang, our A/C were strictly off limits as was our spaces and barracks. But Lo and Behold, we picked up a copy of Time magazine with an article about our ops (not correct) and photos of the interior of the plane.
No reporters or cameramen were allowed access to the compound after that. If the flight commander and det commander had their way, it would be shoot reporters on sight.
