And how does he show this resentment? By looking, acting and dressing differently from everybody else in his high school?

LOL, something tells me he didn't want "normalcy" at all. He seemed to revel in being abnormal, from what I can see. I think maybe it is the speaker--wasn't it Marcus who said it?--who wishes his own family were normal. After all, it is *his* family living there, too.
