Church's Anti-Halloween Flier Upsets Family

Complaint Filed With Police

UPDATED: 10:09 am EDT October 20, 2005

ELLETTSVILLE, Ind. -- An Ellettsville family whose home is decorated for Halloween contacted police after someone placed on its porch a flier that suggests Halloween praises the devil.

Dalene Gully told Indianapolis television station WRTV that she took offense to the flier, which was placed outside her home by the House of Prayer Church of Bloomington.

"I started reading it, and I was very, very upset by it. I found it very accusatory and very threatening," Gully said.

The church's pastor, Larry Mitchell, said the people who left the flier would have preferred to talk with Gully, but she wasn't there.

Mitchell said the church didn't intend to upset the Gully family, but rather tell people that Halloween isn't harmless fun.

"Halloween is not fantasy," Mitchell said. "We're training up our children, and obviously this lady was trained up in this. Halloween seems like it is taking just as much prominence as Christmas."

The Gully family filed a complaint with the Ellettsville Police Department. The incident also prompted the family to install an alarm system at the home, the station reported.

"This is my home, and I like Halloween. If I want to decorate my home, I have every right to decorate my home," Gully said.

File this under "Get A Life". Both sides. The family for involving police when throwing the flier in the trash would have sufficed, and the Church who can't seem to put things in perspective.

From the church's website.

Without seeing the flier I have the blame the idiot complaigning, reactionary people will bitch at anyone accusing them of being the least bit wrong.

Halloween is the continuation of a pagan holiday, there are a lot of non-Christian aspects to it, and most parents let their kids do a lot in the name of halloween (filling their heads with horror films intended for adults for instance).

I'm betting this guy saw 'halloween isn't harmless' and became indignant.

A friend of mine lived on the main drag in a smakll town. Two weeks before Halloween he put a life sized scarecrow in a chair on the front porch. Everyone in town saw it.Two hours before dark on Halloween he carried the scarecrow inside, dressed up like the scarecrow, and had a seat on the porch.

Most kids threw their sacks of candy at him as soon as he moved.

I don't think Halloween is "harmless" fun, but I don't think it is the same as a black mass nor does it summon all the demons from hell, either. :)

I agree, of course, but neither of us got a look at that flyer. What's with all the "trained up" talk?

Those people are crazy. To call the police because someone placed a harmless flier in your yard that you didn't agree with is over sensitivity at its worst.

The police have better things to do and those people need to grow up.

One of my neighbors did something similar. Only the scarecrow had a carved pumpkin for a head. It was sitting in a lounge chair on the front lawn. On Halloween night, he dressed in the clothes and put his head inside the pumpkin and sat on the chair to jump out at the trick or treaters. Very funny, except he ended up going to the hospital the next day because he got pneumonia from having his head inside a cold moist pumpkin.

That was not for membership in the church. The church apparently has a ministry geared toward motorcycle gangs, and that is the criteria for that particular ministry.

'Evilness' aside, why does it have to be so gross? I can't even take my three year-old to the grocery store this time of year, because they have all the masks at the front of the store. Why did it go from cute little ghosts to Bob, the nail-headed Zombie? Why do I see thirteen, & fourteen year olds trick-or-treating? I know of at least one group of Highschool GRADUATES who went trick-or-treating last year.

Halloween sucks now, and it's not because of the human sacrifices.

Church who can't seem to put things in perspective

Imitating evil or associating with it has never been pleasing to God.
