Governor Schwarzenegger To Avoid Bush -- Again

(AP) LOS ANGELES At the Republican National Convention last year, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger couldn't say enough good things about President Bush. But lately, it looks like he's trying to avoid him.

The president will visit California this week for the second time since August, but he and the Republican governor are not expected to see each other - in public or private - for the second consecutive time.

CBS 5 Special Election Headquarters

With the Nov. 8 special election looming, Schwarzenegger is trying to court independents and Democrats to support a string of his ballot proposals - two groups of voters that polls show loath the Republican president.

"Unless President Bush is coming to California to hand over a check from the federal government to help us with the financial challenges we face, the visit seems ill timed," said Karen Hanretty, a spokeswoman for the state Republican Party.

Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a political scientist at the University of Southern California, said the president could turn off voters Schwarzenegger needs to supplement his Republican base on Election Day. Polls have shown some of the proposals lagging at a time when the governor's own popularity has hit an all-time low.

Schwarzenegger's office has told the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley he will not attend Friday's dedication ceremony for an exhibit featuring a Boeing 707 that carried seven presidents.

The governor is also skipping a Republican National Committee fundraiser at a private home in Los Angeles on Thursday. Bush will be at both events.
"We have a very busy campaign schedule," said Todd Harris, a spokesman for Schwarzenegger's campaign.

The governor is pushing ballot initiatives that would cap state spending, strip lawmakers of the power to draw political boundaries, lengthen the probationary period for teachers from two years to five and force public employee unions, such as those representing teachers, firefighters and prison guards, to seek written permission from members before using dues for political purposes.

Bush last made a swing through the state in August, when he stopped in Rancho Cucamonga and San Diego. Schwarzenegger was conspicuously absent.

It's no secret that California is not Bush country. The president lost the state to Democrat John Kerry in the 2004 presidential race and to Vice President Al Gore in 2000.

Recent polls also show Bush's job approval ratings, nationally, are at an all-time low, his image battered by the war in Iraq and the government's slow response to Hurricane Katrina. Meanwhile, a grand jury is investigating whether a crime was committed when presidential adviser Karl Rove, fellow White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby and possibly others in government leaked information blowing the cover of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame, the wife of Bush administration critic Joseph Wilson.

Schwarzenegger had nothing but praise for Bush at the 2004 GOP convention, when he called him "a leader who doesn't flinch, doesn't waver, does not back down." But no one would call them close - they disagree over abortion rights, illegal immigration and stem cell research, among other issues.

While Schwarzenegger is keeping his distance from Bush, he campaigned last week with Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican known for his crossover appeal.

The White House did not return a phone call Tuesday afternoon, but one Republican leader said Bush's visit would generate enthusiasm among Republicans, which could help Schwarzenegger's campaign.

"I don't see any negative," said state Senate Minority Leader Dick Ackerman, R-Tustin.

Schwarzenegger's absence from the library would be striking because the governor has described Reagan as a role model and Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, are friendly with the late president's widow, Nancy Reagan.

But Schwarzenegger has also shown a willingness to skip events that other governors might consider mandatory. Last month, he turned down an invitation to attend opening ceremonies at the University of California, Merced, the first UC campus to be built in four decades.

you don't speak for all California Republicans. Bush doesn't hate California, but California does not love Bush. Bush appreciated Reagan which is why he is coming. the Prez is welcome in my area of California any day of the week.

He can come back when he is here to do BUSINESS in California and gets serious about protecting our border, expanding refining capacity, fires his lame nut job tax reform panel, moves on meaningful tax reform and SLASHES the federal budget.

He could become very popular here if he was bringing a check from Vicente Fox for 10 billion bucks to reimburse California taxpayers.

you don't speak for all California Republicans

From the tenor of newzjunkey's reply I would agree. He doesn't speak for the CAGOP. He speaks instead for about 13% of the California electorate typically called right wing extremists by the MSM. Called worse by the CAGOP.

That partisan California Republicans can continue to bash conservatives and then expect them to support the CAGOP or the RNC is fundamentally puzzling. The CAGOP needs to tread lightly on newzjunkey and like minded conservatives for without their support the CAGOP is unlikely to elected many of their statewide slate of candidates.

I suspect that the CAGOP recognizes the power of the right in California hence their support for McClintock in the upcoming, state wide, election. From my perspective the CAGOP required few concessions from McClintock in return for their cash and organizational support which is a clue to their perceived benefit of McClintock's faction to the CAGOP.

Bush to visit Reagan Library

By staff reports
October 17, 2005

President Bush is scheduled to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library's Air Force One Pavilion in Simi Valley Friday.

Invited by officials at the library, President Bush and his wife plan to attend the 11 a.m. ceremony and a 1 p.m. lunch, according to the White House.

The 87,000-square-foot pavilion features the plane that President Ronald Reagan used throughout his years in office. The aircraft was also used by six other presidents, including the current president, who was the last one to fly in the Boeing 707 in 2001.

A total of 600 people are expected to attend the ceremony.

President Bush will arrive in California on Thursday to speak at a Los Angeles fund-raising event that night for the Republican National Committee.

The pavilion opens to the public on Monday.

And, also from www.venturacountystar.com:
Bush will attend opening of Air Force One Pavilion

By Anna Bakalis, abakalis@VenturaCountyStar.com
October 18, 2005

President George W. Bush will attend the official unveiling of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library's Air Force One Pavilion in Simi Valley on Friday.

While the presidential library won't release a full list of those attending until later in the week, first lady Laura Bush will attend. Nancy Reagan will host the grand opening.

The pavilion's opening, coupled with the president's visit, will put Simi Valley momentarily back into the national spotlight it held after Reagan's death in 2004.

"We've had presidents here before, but not Bush," said Simi Valley Mayor Paul Miller, who will also attend Friday. "We're really excited."

About 600 people are expected at the invitation-only ceremony, which is the first during the four-day opening weekend. The normal visiting hours of the library and museum from Thursday through Sunday are suspended.

The pavilion is the most ambitious addition to the library since its opening in 1991. The 87,000-square-foot pavilion features the plane that Reagan used throughout his years in office. Although Reagan flew on the Boeing 707 on 211 missions, more than any other president, it was used by six other presidents, including Bush, who flew in the aircraft in 2001.

Bush, who is scheduled to speak at a fundraiser for the Republican National Committee in Los Angeles Thursday night, will speak at the pavilion opening, which starts at 11 a.m. He and the first lady will stay for lunch that will feature speeches by former Air Force One pilots.

With the presidential visit, security is expected to be at the same high level as it was during the opening of the library.

Five presidents attended that ceremony.

"It's going to be a fairly large event," said Craig Husband, Ventura County undersheriff. "We expect a lot of dignitaries, and there will be a lot of security in place."

Husband said the Ventura County Sheriff's Department will work with the Secret Service, the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans and the Simi Valley Police Department. Details on re-routing traffic during the event will become available in the next few days.

"This will be on par with the grand opening of the library in 1991," said Simi Valley Police Chief Mark Layhew.

Although invited, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is not coming, said Melissa Giller, library spokeswoman.

"His schedule did not permit him to come," Giller said.

Jessica Millan, executive director of the Ventura County Republican Party, said the governor is busy campaigning for initiatives on the Nov. 8 special election ballot.

On Saturday, the library will hold an invitation-only event for Reagan staff alumni, including anyone who has worked for the president or Nancy Reagan during their years in Sacramento, all campaigns, the White House and post-presidency.

Nancy Reagan will speak at the event.

It will include the dedication of the Ronald Reagan Pub, which has pieces of a pub from Ballyporeen, Ireland, that the president visited in 1984.

The re-creation includes two well-worn bars and the wallpaper from the pub.

On Sunday, the library has invited specific local community members for a tour. Those invited include local government officials, police, firefighters and business people.

On Monday, the pavilion will be open to the public for the first time, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Here is an UPDATE, from www.whittierdailynews.com:

Bush to appear at Reagan Library

By Angie Valencia-Martinez, Staff Writer
Whittier Daily News
President George W. Bush is scheduled to arrive today in Southern California, the day before his appearance at an invitation- only dedication of the $31 million Air Force One Pavilion at the Reagan Presidential Library.

Bush will be joined by first lady Laura Bush and former first lady Nancy Reagan at the ribbon-cutting of the 87,000-square- foot pavilion, which houses "The Spirit of '76,' the Boeing 707 that served as the official plane for him, Reagan and six other former presidents.

"We are very proud that President and Mrs. Bush accepted our invitation to attend our grand opening,' said Melissa Giller, a spokeswoman for the Reagan Library. "We know it means a lot to Mrs. Reagan.

"Not only did Bush fly on the plane, he represents what this is all about: the `Flying White House.' '

The jet serves as the centerpiece for the new pavilion, which also features a former Marine One helicopter, presidential limousine and a replica of an Irish pub.

The exhibit tells the story of Reagan's legacy in promoting peace and democracy worldwide.

About 750 people are expected at the exclusive grand opening, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the hilltop library, where Reagan is buried.

The 45-minute program includes remarks by Bush and Nancy Reagan, a flyover by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, and a 75-piece orchestra.

A separate luncheon program features speeches by former Air Force One pilots.

But the highlight, for many, will be the brief appearance by the commander in chief.

"Any time the president of the United States attends an event in your hometown it's a huge honor,' said Simi Valley City Councilman Glen Becerra, who will attend Friday's ceremony. "It's something I'm very proud of because it says how important the event is not only to the community but the country.'

The Reagan Library will be closed today through Sunday to prepare for Monday's grand opening, although private, invitation-only events are scheduled for the weekend.

"It's really come full circle for us,' Giller said. "We can't wait to open our doors and let the public come see what we have been able to see every day.'

Because of Bush's visit, Madera Road between Country Club Drive West and Country Club Drive East and Wood Ranch Parkway between Madera Road and Country Club Drive will be closed on Friday.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers, including those with the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, Simi Valley Police, and California Highway Patrol, will be on hand to assist Secret Service agents with the visitation of the president.

"Because there are a number of dignitaries who have been invited to the event, there will be extensive security,' said Ventura County Undersheriff Craig Husband.

I lived in California for over 40 years. I don't think this person should slam the president and its obvious that that is what she is doing here. Part of California's demise is the refusal or lack of attention paid to borders. Illegal aliens cost the state thousands of dollars and have helped close emergency rooms. California must pay to educate the children of illegal immigrants. All this comes at a cost.

Yeah I am sorry that they have screwed up your state so much. :(

I see, you comment actually makes me understand where she is coming from. Part of the problem is that the Feds fail to protect our borders, and hence should be liable for the costs of illegal immigration.

But then part of it is our own stupid judges that declare voter-approved propositions void, like the one that would have refused medical care to illegals. :P
