When Only Slabs of Pink, Jellied Byproduct Will Do (Koreans love Spam)
The LA Times ^ | October 15, 2005 | Barbara Demick, Times Staff Writer

2005 SEOUL — Stroll into an expensive department store and walk straight past the $180 watermelon with a ribbon twirled just so around its stem. Don't bother with the tea in a butterfly-shaped tin for $153, or with the gift boxes of Belgian chocolates or French cheeses. If you're looking for a gift that bespeaks elegance and taste, you might try Spam. The luncheon meat might be the subject of satire back home in the U.S., but in South Korea, it is positively classy.

I like Kimchi, spam I can live without. Had too much of it as a kid. Never went camping without it. And whenever my father cooked, it was his favorite meat.

"It goes very nicely with red wine,"

Not me Honey, the only way to enjoy spam is fried with eggs, onions and hot peppers out trying to bag a bambi or two.

I love Spam. It's delicious fried up with eggs on a Coleman stove. One must have cans of Spam on a camping trip : )

I had it a few times when I was very little.

They served it up fried with the bacon and home fries in the Navy.

It's my favorite sandwich filling nowadays

I'll have a Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam. Please.

Spam on rye bread with mustard and potato chips crushed by the top slice ... perfection ... followed by a huge glass of milk.

You can buy Canned ham in the grocers cheaper than Spam these days. Spam is no longer a cheap meal. I do like it once in a while. Corned beef hash isnt bad on eggs either.

Darn, the search engine is disabled at the Spam Haiku website, so I can't find my own contribution. But here's a few more:

Row away from shore
Toss the SPAM over the bow
Anchor of my soul

8915.
Think of distant lands
Do they have SPAM there I ask
Storm clouds gather rain

Nummy fragrances
Turning of the weathervane
I live near Hormel

I believe Hormel sells the most spam to asian countries, if I remember correctly. They even make a gift pack.

Personally, I can't bring myself to eat the stuff.

Know who else loves Spam? Hawaiians!

It's on a lot of restaurant menus and they had 7 or 8 flavors of it in the grocery stores. They even had it on their McDonalds menus!

I'll have the spam, fried eggs, sausage and spam.

That's not got much spam in it.

Ditto. Too much spam as a child is one of the reasons I'm a vegetarian today.

Never get between a South Sea Islander and their Spam. From Hawaii down, it is beloved, and said love shows rather heavily with the devotees.
