Little prince's first appearance

Denmark's Princess Mary and her new-born son have made their first public appearance, with the Tasmanian-born princess showing off her baby to the media just 84 hours after birth.

The appearance at Copenhagen's Rigshospitalet, where Mary delivered the boy at the weekend, was watched by a crowd of several hundred people waving Danish and Australian flags.

She said it had been a "truly wonderful" experience.

"I am feeling wonderful - it's been a truly wonderful life experience," Mary said.

"Words can't describe how happy one feels.

"We are very excited by all the messages and well-wishers.

"It's really very touching."

Mary, Crown Prince Frederik and son took their leave after a five-minute photo call at the hospital, leaving by red carpet to an awaiting car that drove them to their residence at Fredensborg Palace north of Copenhagen.

The couple walked to the car and together they placed the young child in a baby capsule in the back seat, just like any other couple leaving hospital after a birth.

Mary then slid into the back seat beside the baby as Prince Frederik drove away, waving at the crowd.

The new mother was wearing a black dress and a green and white coat.

She looked relaxed, elegant and happy as she emerged from the hospital, the young prince asleep and cradled in her left arm.

The photo-call was a massive media event, with television broadcast vans stretched for more than 200 metres outside the maternity wing of the hospital.

More than 100 members of the media were crowded into the hospital lobby, with dozens of camera-crew balanced upon ladders to capture the best shot.

The new prince - expected to be named Christian in line with Danish tradition - was asleep in his mother's arms as they left the hospital.

He will have his next media appearance at his christening, expected early next year.

The new-born prince was Princess Mary's first, but she had previously said she wanted to have a large family.

When asked what she was going to do when the she arrived home at the palace, Mary said, "Change the diapers".

She said Frederik had been of great assistance during the birth.

"He was actually a big help - I could not have managed without him," the princess said.

She confirmed the baby was breastfeeding and said it was going well.

Although the baby is yet to be named, Mary said she and Frederik have been calling him lots of different names in the meantime.

A nice story, good to hear good news. I heard on the radio that if they follow tradition, the new little prince will be named 'Christian'. A very nice name.

The Princess looks radiant. And the baby prince is a cutie, too!

In related news...in a move to emulate other European monarchs, the Baby Prince immediately went to a costume party dressed as a Nazi, and is dating a stripper.

Yeah lets all celebrate Royalty. Of course we peasants must all bow to the infant because of his noble of birth.

Nice family.

If reality would allow me to be smug about anything, I think it would be about the fact that I am really not impressed by celebrity or royalty.

Given a choice, I would much prefer to meet my favorite authors or General Schwartzkopf.

I think that in Denmark, you wave to the King when he rides by on his bicycle.

And hopefully not the last!

Excellent point! Sorry, but any reference to European royalty bugs me. My ancestors left that kind of oppressive rule and we fought a war to free ourselves from the same.

Why would we idolize them?

They bring nothing to their respective societies except to soak up the wealth and then look down upon those who are carrying their weight. And all because of their pedigree and nothing else.

Just another form of welfare.

Hardly

The Danes smuggled out thousands of Jews to Sweden, right under the Nazi's noses, in WWII.

A cousin of mine was a leader of that effort. I seriously doubt they'd wear NAZI uniforms for any reason.

Not that I would want to live in a Monarchy but some Monarchs did actually bring good to their respective societies. Look at Charlemagne...

You're welcome. I'd be just as happy for them if it was Fred and Molly next door, and their new baby, Chris.

Don't think anyone here is celebrating royalty. Just celebrating a new life is all.
