Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, said he expects indictments this week in the CIA leak case involving White House advisers Karl Rove and Scooter Libby.
Kristol said "the mood is bleak in the White House today, and said the environment surrounding the federal grand jury testimony is "pretty grim. Although the indictments may not ultimately result in anything substantive, Kristol said there is a pins-and-needles feel to the grand jury investigation into the leaking of a CIA agent's name to the media in 2003.
"The net has been cast wide, Kristol told Fox News Tuesday. "Lots of junior aides have testified. Its been a very comprehensive investigation by the prosecutor. I think there will be indictments and the mood is pretty bleak in the White House.
As for what this means for President Bush and the daily working of the White House, Kristol said it is too early to tell.
"The White House has to ask, How do we segregate this? This is a problem, but the legal system has to run its course.
"Meanwhile, Kristol said, "the president has to take the initiative on foreign policy and economic policy and sort of set this aside.
Kristol, the best conservative commentators? Bill is that you?
Most of us are not against commentators voicing their opinions. It is their utterly awful over the top comments. They are so crazed and nasty in their opinions you would think that GWB appointed Hillary or Michael Moore. The woman has not even had a hearing and they have already condemned the woman to the death penalty. Everyday Frum and Co sound more like the wild eyed nutcases at DU. They just do not condemn her using mostly four letter words like the DUmmies do. They think they are more important than they are. Good Lord GWB did not ask their opinion, and their panties are in a bunch. I would not give you two cents for any of their opinions. Just look at Rich Lowry, he looks like he is auditioning for a job in a heavy metal Band, except for the suit which looks a bit disheveled. His hair is wild and greasy and he looks like a 14 year old that did not sleep for a week, and he whines. I'm going to listen to this guy's opinions? Not on your life. He substitutes for Hannity and thinks he has made the big time. That is a laugh.
Exactly, Irving Kristol the original Neo-con had an excellent career and reputation. I certainly did not agree with him on a lot of things either or Gertrude, but they were credible and would have never been backstabbers like Bill Kristol.
It's hard to deal with Fitz on all of this. He's been great about not leaking. But he's taken this nonsense far too seriously. This should have ended a month ago.
The thing is, I think Rove/Libby got this info from a couple of different "sources" and it was the biggest open secret in Washington. When Wilson went to Niger, everyone wanted to know who the hell he was. They probably thought nothing of spreading the info because they didn't barge into Human Resources in Langley to figure it out. It was just a rumor.
I don't know that there was a perjury trap. If I had to guess, Fitz will write a report saying what awful and terrible people Rove/Libby are and hinting that Judy Miller should say more but she's not a part of the probe.
The truth is, we know nothing of this probe and all we are hearing is wishful thinking on the part of these guys.
According to another story, there will be no "report" - just indictments or no indictments, perhaps supported by a brief statement. Apparently the GJ info is confidential, even after the jury is disbanded.
Gee whiz. The neocons (known for their loyalty and principles) are jumping ship. What a big surprise?
can't remember a thread with SO MANY posts removed by mod!
Little man Kristol is totally lacking in intellectual honest.
Bill Kristol has been making trouble in DC for Republicans, particularly the Bush family, since 1988.
He personally advised Dan Quayle to make the "Murphy Brown speech" and also to make a speech in the middle of the 1992 campaign distancing himself from the first President Bush on foreign policy. James Baker wouldn't let Kristol participate in campaign strategy meetings because he leaked everything to the press.
When it became obvious that Governor Bush was going to be running for the presidency, Kristol wrote several articles saying that Bush couldn't win, and said that the ONLY person who could defeat Gore was COLIN POWELL! He pushed Powell until it became obvious that Powell wasn't going to run, and then backed McCain.
When McCain lost, Kristol spent all summer and fall of 2000 trashing every speech and campaign appearance Bush made. On election night, his possum grin increased as the Bush lead grew smaller. During the Florida recount, he constantly trashed the court strategy of Baker and was always pessimistic.
When Gore finally conceded, Kristol remained positive for about 45 days, until it became obvious that this Bush wasn't going to hire him any more than the first Bush would.
So, we got the trashing of Colin Powell (his former favorite) in an article called "Our Profound National Humiliation"...about the fact that we got the crew of that spy plane back from China without gunfire.
I also am convinced Kristol was involved in the Jeffords defection, based on the fact that he had a "source" who let him scoop everyone else about Jeffords. (Someone who was a loyal conservative, if not Republican, might have warned the white House, but I digress). Kristol sat there on television with this big grin about Jeffords jumping ship. Later I find out that the reason Jeffords left was because he was convinced the White House was going to drop the dairy subsidy, something they had never intended to do! Now where would Jeffords have gotten that idea? Since Kristol HAD to have been talking to Jeffords (because only 3 people knew of the defection, Daschle, Jeffords, and a democrat go-between senator) I believe that Kristol was the one who told Jeffords that. I can't prove it, but every time I think of his evil smile when telling Brit Hume of his scoop, I have no doubt.
Kristol was also reported as continuing to meet with McCain's staffers well into 2001, and I don't think they were playing tiddlywinks...probably hatching the CFR plot.
So how you can say that Kristol doesn't wish any harm to come to this administration, I don't know. Even when Kristol is on Bush's side (War in Irag) I believe it is simply a coincidence. You will note that Kristol has also been pushing for Rumsfeld's resignation as well.
Yeah, Bill Kristol, loyal conservative and Bush supporter. HAHAHAA!
Maybe (if true) this is because NO ONE knows what's going on? -- Including Kristol.
I would like to see Kristol and his mini-Me Frum totally discredited.
Just watch - he'll be backing Hillary in 2008..
Um... Maybe the WH is a little morose over the whole SC imbrogolio? I'd put money on that before a whole bunch of indictments...
Preparing to jump the ship?
Anyway, Kristol is obviously playing out his role in the end game of this delicious Rovian plot.
He is only a Bush ally if he agrees 100% with a Bush decision. If it deviates even slightly from his preference, he writes like the sky is falling.
I'm not a big fan of the term neo-con, because it is used so loosely. The left wing press calls Rumsfeld a neo-con. Funny for a 71 year old guy who has been a republican for 50 years.
I think someone got banned and all his posts were pulled (?)
Kristol is not a "homo". He is a hubrisexual. He gets orgasmic over gossip, innuendo, and anything with McCain mentioned.
