KIRKLAND Seahawks free safety Ken Hamlin is in the trauma unit of Harborview Medical Center today, the victim of an assault outside a downtown Seattle nightclub early this morning.
Dr. Stan Herring, one of the team's physicians, said Hamlin has a small blood clot on the left side of his brain and bruising of the brain tissue. He also has a skull fracture that appears to be caused by being struck in the head with a blunt object.
Hamlin also has a broken right hand. He's in serious condition but stable and has to be awakened periodically, though he is aware where he is and knows family is coming to see him.
An incident report from the Seattle Police Department said police responded at 2:04 a.m. today to a disturbance at the intersection of 1st Avenue South and South Main Street. According to the report, Hamlin was discovered on the ground and told police his head, neck and chest areas were in severe pain. The Seattle Fire Department was called to the scene and treated Hamlin, who was taken to Harborview.
Hamlin told police he didn't remember what had happened.
A witness at the scene, described as Hamlin's girlfriend, said she and Hamlin were leaving the club and were on the sidewalk when Hamlin placed his hand on a man in front of him and said, "Excuse me." The witness said Hamlin and the man began pushing each other after the man said something to Hamlin. After Hamlin punched the man in the face, another man approached Hamlin and hit him with his right forearm, knocking him to the ground.
The two men who had been involved with Hamlin then began fighting with others while Hamlin was on the ground. Other witnesses told police that one of the two men then picked up a street sign and hit Hamlin while he was on the ground. Police searched unsuccessfully for the two men at the scene.
Hamlin's agent, J. Lawrence Temple, said he is flying from Austin, Texas to Seattle to check on Hamlin, but said, "the [medical] reports I'm getting are that things are pretty good."
Hamlin, 24, made five tackles in the Seahawks' 42-10 victory over Houston last night at Qwest Field.
"His spirits are good considering the situation," Seahawks president Tim Ruskell said in a statement released by the team. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Ken and his family."
Hamlin was able to phone coach Mike Holmgren and said he was sorry, Holmgren said. Marquand Manuel will start in Hamlin's place against the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday at Qwest Field.
It was unclear whether any other Seahawks were at the nightclub when the assault took place.
Ken Hamlin
What the hell difference would that make.
Not uncommon these days.
Isn't there a Ken Hamlin who is a conservative writer and talk show host?
Hamlin is 23 y/o, 6'2" and 209 lbs. And, as a free safety in the NFL, he's tough. He was cold-cocked by a guy who had the first guy's back. He didn't deserve what he got.
"The Black Avenger."
I stand corrected.
Isn't that the truth. These days, I am glad to be closer to Tacoma than Seattle. Who would thunkit back in the day?
How much do you wanna bet they find these scumbags before they find the scumbags that beat up those soldiers outside a Seattle nightclub a couple of months ago.
Hey,they might have been the SAME guys!
I wonder if it was the same dudes...
Hope he's OK.
The last TV report is that he's stable and talking. Good signs--he should do OK. That's an excellent hospital out there.
I think the "who wooda think it" is that this is liberal Seattle. City of Lenin statues, peace and love. And corrupt elections and....
Come on Seattle. Clean up your city!
My son is NYPD in an area in NYC where there are a lot of clubs. They are assigned to the clubs when they let out (4 AM). Seattle does not do a similar thing with the SPD?
If they find these guys it will be because someone rats 'em out thinking Hamlin will pay them, or if their is some good video stills and an officer recognizes the turds.
I wouldn't go out in Downtown after working there for just one month during field training and I don't drink when I go out because I'm carrying.
I lived in a suburb of Seattle called Tacoma (heh, heh...Taco-mans hate it when Tacoma is called a suburb of Seattle) about 20 years ago and made the mistake of going out for a few drinks after a Seahawks game with some friends. Downtown Seattle was not exactly a picnic in the park back then. Sounds like it hasn't gotten much better.
No they don't. Officers respond to the problem areas at closing times but there was a hiring freeze for three years. Consequently the number of officers on the street doesn't always account for the possibility of an incident occurring shortly before bar closing that ties up officers with booking, reports, or other such events and which keeps there from being enough officers to go to each club.
Some of the problem clubs are Medusa, Bada (on Asian night), Element on Sunday night when it's 18 or older, and any of the others that are down near Pioneer Square. It was not uncommon for 300-500 people to come out of the Element on a Sunday night this last summer. Every available officer would have to stage around it at closing time. Then immediately afterwards all the car prowl reports come in because the car prowlers know that women aren't smart enough to just leave that handbag at home. Nope, they bring out, then leave it i nthe car. Car prowlers have a field day, or night as it were, when the clubs are hoppin. I see a line of women waiting to get into a club and I say, "car prowl victim, car prowl victim, car pr......."
The only difference is most of, and I mean literally most of, the "native americans" who were your standard street corner drunks in Pioneer square have died off in the last few years. All their warranties ran out about the same time.
Now it's mostly Whites and Hispanics.
