For Corzine, government can be a solution

The Democratic candidate for governor proposes an agenda in which the state will be a force for improving lives.

By Chris Mondics

Inquirer Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Even among Democrats, Jon S. Corzine is considered one of the Senate's more reliably liberal members.

He voted against the resolution empowering President Bush to go to war in Iraq and took the lead for Democrats in fighting Bush's tax cuts, making the rounds of Sunday morning talk shows to argue they were bad for the economy.

He has fought efforts to restrict abortion rights, voted against the administration's prescription-drug bill in part because it barred the government from bargaining with pharmaceutical companies over price, and pushed for more government oversight of chemical-plant security.

Now, as he runs for governor of New Jersey against Republican Douglas Forrester, Corzine is proposing an activist agenda in which state government would solve problems as varied as dwindling high-tech job development and soaring health insurance costs.

Corzine has long argued that government can be a force to improve living conditions for everyone - a view that is out of fashion in conservative circles - and his campaign prescriptions seem to flow naturally from his Senate career.

"I prefer the term progressive, but I don't run from" the word liberal, Corzine said. "I believe in equal access and opportunities, not outcomes. I believe in making sure we have a social safety net. Those are fundamentally liberal policies."

When has the government ever "solved" a social or economic problem?

When it's arrested folks like Corzine for getting caught red-handed in a corruption racket?

Yes, that would solve a social problem. I stand corrected.

Ok does anyone really think Dougie can pull this off? I really really hope so but it is NJ and they keep elected Dems almost as much as Mass.

Ok Corzine, let me sum up your statement. "I live in a dream world where progress is not measured by results but by intentions and wishes."

Except for when he was getting rich in the private sector. Now though, government IS the only answer.

Just take a stroll (if you dare) through Camden and Trenton to witness the benefits of progressive government. I shall never return to live in the liberal/dem/police state where I was born.

God help my family who remain there.

Why would anybody vote for a politician who looks like a child molester?

Don't forget all the money he'll have to spend to pay of Democrat special interest groups. But it sounds like he'll turn into Florio II if elected.

I should also add that nothing is more dangerous than a "progressive" who wants to reshape the world and fix things yet thinks that he's above the rules.
