Time chief expected to leave by end of year

NEW YORK - Norman Pearlstine, the longtime editorial chief of the Time Inc. magazine empire, is planning to step aside by the end of the year or even sooner, several people familiar with the matter said Friday.

Pearlstine is likely to be succeeded as editor-in-chief of Time Inc. by John Huey, who is currently the editorial director, according to people who spoke on condition they not be named since the announcement had not been made.

The move has been widely anticipated for months, but the timing was uncertain.

Earlier this week, Pearlstine announced plans to write a book. Pearlstine, who is 63 years old, has been editor-in-chief of Time Inc. for 11 years. Huey is 57.

Dawn Bridges, a spokeswoman for Time Inc., declined to comment.

The New York Post and The Wall Street Journal both ran stories on the matter on Friday............
