I just skimmed the site, looks good. Offhand do you know of any US plans to build more carriers, specifically in the Pacific? What are the locations of the current carriers.

Looks good! I hope you'll add the history of aircraft carriers as well. The history of the Lexington/Saratoga carriers, Yorktown class and Essex class carriers during World War II is incredible.

Looks good. I guess you can tell from the name where my background comes from.... My only regret in moving from a cruiser to a gator freighter is that if someone takes a shot at you on an amphib, you don't have many options to shoot back with.

Jeff, quick glance around and bumped into what looks like an error in the entry about the Varyag. The route, as described, doesn't seem to track:
"passing through the Mediteranean, the Suez Canal, around the Cape of Good Hope, across the Indian Ocean, through the Straits of Malacca, into the China Sea and finally to Dalien, China"
Seems like an odd route that goes from the Med, through the Suez and then on to the Indian Ocean by way of the Cape of Good hope. If their navigation was that bad then I don't think that the earlier statement would really apply:
"a cruise that the big ship, now without rudders or engines, made in surprisingly good condition"
Of course, not having rudders or engines might just explain it. ;^>
(Now watch, I'm missing something really simple and I'm completely wrong - ah well)

Jeff,
Nice website.
Off Topic, A story that needs to be told via a movie, (or it's sunken hull found on the Discovery Program) is the sinking of the "Shinano" Japan's Secret Carrier of WWII.
Any others here on the Freep Familiar with that story?

I got to drive a Subaru on the Connie once. Flight deck, down the elevator, through the hanger deck and down a 30 degree ramp to the pier.

I can't find the Ronald Reagan there. Did that ship go into service yet? Is there such a carrier? (I know - somebody always finds fault! Sorry)
