CA: Staff for governor's wife costing taxpayers $500,000 a year

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's ballot call for California to live within its means is triggering questions about whether his own administration is living within its means -- especially when it comes to his wife, Maria Shriver.

Shriver doesn't hold elected office, but records show she does command a half-million-dollar-a-year staff -- which, depending on how you cut it, is anywhere from $60,000 to $180,000 more than what her predecessor, Sharon Davis, had.

Recently, Daniel Zingale -- a Democratic gay rights advocate who had been working on Controller Steve Westly's gubernatorial campaign -- was appointed Shriver's $123,255 chief of staff. When he takes over Nov. 1, he will be earning about $30,000 more than Davis' top aide, Trish Fontana, was paid.

Fontana is still on the payroll -- working as a Shriver aide, though at a slightly reduced salary of $83,000 a year.

Zingale is replacing Donna Lucas, another $123,000 aide, who will stay on the books until the end of the year when she moves to the governor's office.

Then there's Shriver's $100,000-a-year press secretary and events coordinator, Terri Carbaugh. Her position, we're told, didn't exist during the Davis years.

Back then, media duties for the first lady were handled on an as-needed basis by the governor's press office.

Liberal Republicans like Ahnold Schwarzy are just as capable as liberal Democrats at spending the peoples money. And if they're a Kennedy, they're even better. LOL

Every every every liberal I've ever known who was born to money grows up to have little or no respect for it. Shriver is no different. These types of liberals are the absolute worst people to allow anywhere near public treasuries. Thank goodness Kerry was not elected. He and his wife would have spent a fortune.

Arnold, on the other hand, should not have this "problem" when it comes to taxpayer dollars. Pathetic....

What we got here is a humungous case of SOUR GRAPES.
Democrat cry baby

Arnie has things well in hand and Mrs. Schwarzenegger is right in there with him. He or she might even be paying for much of the expense.

Well, of course! Tightening the belt is for the little people like us. The elitist class of "politician" or "politician's wife" is far above such nonsense.

And is the governator going to cut these ridiculous expenses down? Of course not.

Again there is not much difference in the factions of our two pol parties. They won't cut spending. the won't address the illegals, they both keep us in these anti-American organizations, ie UN. Let's face it - we live in an oligarchy. AS & his wife are part of it.

Term limits for the senate are SO important.

Unfortunately, we need the senate to implement them.

If you keep reading down the article you will find this:

"But don't tell everyone else to live within their means when you can't do it yourself,'' said Steve Maviglio, press aide under former Gov. Gray Davis and now a spokesman for the Democratic labor coalition fighting the governor's November initiatives.

The libs are worried about $500k when we are $10,000,000k over budget? Yeah right. This is just a hit piece from the Rat party and Big Labor, gladly published by these lib "journalists".

Their purpose is not to save money but to demonize Arnold and thus defeat the reform measures on the ballot next month. That will enable them to continue overspending tens of billions on public employees and socialist buy-the-vote programs.

How true...

How dare they question a Kennedy family member's right to loot the public treasury... How dare they question America's royal family?

Consider the source. Matier and Ross are big time Frisco lefties. You might as well get your political info from Robert Scheer.

If you want to swallow this bidness whole-hog be my guest. If you don't like Arnold, that's fine, but it's no reason for a conservative to buy into a rat smear, IMHO.

To anyone who thinks RINOs don't work hand in hand with Democrats, there it is. It couldn't have happened without Arnold's approval.

I second your opinion. They are clueless about where money comes from and where it goes, just as long as they have enough.

Remember when one of ARnold's planks was to "open the books" and let the sun shine in on the dealings of Sacramento? And that about 10 nanoseconds after he got there he erected a Hadrian's wall of staff to keep those dealings hidden?

I do.

Hmm...seems to be some misunderstanding. I'm replying to the thread, not necessarily to you personally. But since you ask...

Here's my bottom line when it comes to politics: Play for the win, period. Politics is the art of the possible, not some dream world. I see Arnold as a means to an end. He serves a useful purpose at the moment and that purpose is to stop the bleeding and begin to turn the tide.

I want Arnold to win this election, I want him to win in '06 and I want McClintock to come on board as LG. I want to see McClintock as the next governor after Arnold. That's strategery.

You want to build a politcally conservative California? After a generation of the state being run by socialists and moonbats, it's gonna take time and political acumen.

That's just the way the game is played.

Kool-aid drinker? Give it a rest.
