They (liberals) aren't used to being challenged. My mom is democrat and doesn't know she should not be - I can't even talk to her. She has an allegiance to the Democratic Party and she doesn't even realize it has left her.

Question: How does a democrat (my mother) and independent (father) raise 3 extremely conservative kids while claiming to hate the right? Answer: They are conservative but will not admit it.

Try to avoid the politics arguments for later discussion.
Focus on areas of interest, common interest and values that you both share and agree on ( she might be surprised ( just imagine a light bulb going on in her mind ) that you both actually DO agree on SOMETHING ) that you believe in some of the things that she believes in, but, keep it on a light topic.
My dad was a Democrat ( FDR Democrat generation, raised during WWII..50s ), and he shared the views of abortion as the liberals do, but, it was hard to read my dad, because, he also shared some values as you and me.
Yes, my dad and I had ( shall I say ? debates ) debates on politics and religion, but, one thing my dad and I never did was have knock down arguments on politics and religion
My dad and I respected each other and had respect towards each other.
Sadly to say, my dad passed away from a heart attack a few years ago, but, at his funeral, his co worker ( I knew his co worker ) came up to me, and said to me " ( ____ )( my name ) out of all the children your dad had, your the one who spent the most time with your dad, and your the one he talked about ( and was proud of the most ) the most."
I showed my dad ( in spite that he was a Democrat ) that I loved him, and I know in my heart he knew it.
