Colyer and others estimate that about 2,000 are in North America today, reclusive nocturnal animals living in thickly wooded areas with waterways, eating meat and plants and making nests out of trees and brush.

Have any "nests" ever been found?

A professional geologist/engineer that I knew was a smoke jumper for awhile. He said one time they had jumped into a remote site in Northern California fighting a fire. They came across what he claimed might have been a "nest" - large trees and brush piled up and wedged in between trees to form a 3-sided (as I recall) "fort". However, he said they were about 50 miles or some such distance away from any roads or trails. He said it also stunk to high-heaven. He wasn't the type to maake stuff up.

I like to think that there is something running around out there that we don't know much about. Plus - they make great bedtime stories for my kids!

I went to the conference yesterday for the second year in a row. It's fun and interesting and many of the speakers were very knowledgeable with 10, 20, 30+ years of experience in tracking and collecting evidence. One of the speakers showed a picture of a nest, which was lifted from the ground and resides in a museum some where.
