CHAMBLEE, Ga. -- Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, the first Cuban-American elected to the U.S. Senate, said Friday he was teaming up with the only black member of the chamber to introduce an immigration enforcement bill.
Martinez, a Republican, said he expected to announce the details of the bill later this month with Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.
"Immigration is something that we got to get fixed," Martinez told a crowd of Georgia's Hispanic government and business leaders in the northern Atlanta suburb.
"First and foremost, we've got to do border enforcement," he said. "Then we got to have a worker program. There are people that are here that this economy absolutely needs — there's nothing wrong with that."

There are no illegal aliens in the United States that our economy absolutely needs. Any jobs that are currently filled by illegal aliens can be filled by American workers or legal immigrant workers.
I think Martinez may be closer to Souter than to any conservative elected in the last 10 years. He has holds on appointments and votes against the President. Aren't we all glad that we can see the real conservatives before they are elected or appointed. /pro H. Miers rant off

I love how the Leftists talk about the civil and constitutional rights of illegal immigrants. Hello, they are not citizens, they didn't swear to the Constitution, or any of our laws. So how do they magically get all these rights? Is the whole world protected by the US Constitution?
And these same people, who are so willing to push our system of laws and justice on the whole world, are the same dingbats who think the US unnecessarily asserts its authority, both militarily, financially, culturally, etc. on the rest of the world. What a bunch of dungheads.

I can't believe I campaigned for this guy. What a disappointment. But then, the alternative was Betty Castor Oil. "Sigh"
It seems to me that the GOP/RNC is unwilling or afraid to support conservatives in Senate races. Martinez is a result of that long standing unwritten policy.
Conservatives don't get support or funding and are regularly "discouraged" by party operatives from running for senate seats.
The administration shares the blame in as much as it does not get support from the senate. Bush's people have had a hand in this effort to keep consevatives out of the senate. And, in a move as brilliant as jumping in crap, they are directly responsible for all the grief from Spector.
