I can also blame her husband who brought her to Virginia from New York and abandoned his family. She was not raised on welfare and wanted no part of it – but was left with little choice.

"A brief amount of time on welfare -- that is to say using it as intended as a safety net"

Thats the worst part of it. Any program designed as a safety net is exploited and abused from the day (probably the hour) it goes into existence.

Some of my local "news"-casters did an infomercial for food stamps on the evening news a few weeks ago, reminding everyone that food stamps are an Entitlement. They made it sound as if not enough people on food stamps is a crisis.

I guess it doesn't occur to them that many, despite being low-income, have something called pride, and think they ought to pay their own way through life. I can't believe there is anyone in this country who isn't already aware of the food stamp program, and we don't need our "news" people advertising that more need to get on the gravy train. Oh well, I shouldn't expect so much from the "news" people here, they've done infomercials for local psychics too, including giving out their phone numbers.

ALL government funded welfare must either end or be substantially cut to furnish only supplimental levels provision.

The sad thing is that we probably paid a lot of taxpayers' money for this "study".

Nope. The Cato Institute is on the libertarian side and doesn't take government hand-outs.

I think you might be slightly misuderstanding.

This is not a bad reflection on you, nor your family. Welfare is there as a safety net to be used when we kit the skids -- it happends to many people for many reasons.

You (and Hubby) did it exactly the way it was supposed to be done (and all the other stuff too). Get off as fast as possible, use as little as possible.

We are holding you up as a prism to see how the wefare system is used by most of the current people on it (again, NOT you): Work the system as a legacy, game it in all ways possible, buy stuff so you don't have any liquid assets (which are subtracted when calculating "need") -- $200 haircuts, 60" plasma TVs, gameboys and plasytations all around.

I spent a lot my childhood on welfare and every day was a shame for my Mom -- and she let us know it. It is part of the reason she died young. She also went to night school, got an AA, and got off of all public assistance, although it took quite a few years.

Where, does it stop?

Right after that comma, n00b.

Properly written English can be a good thing.

Thank you for your kind remarks...

One of the 'promises', that the military makes, to its members, is that it will take care of your medical problems, free or at a minimum charge...I guess I was just naive...I did not realize that medical care would be provided, only if it was decided that such medical care, was worth the money spent...my son wound up feeling like the military did not feel his life was worth saving...and that was hurtful for me and my husband to see our son demoralized in such a manner, only adding more pain to what the leukemia could do to him...

You sound as if you also, like so many in life, have had some hard times...my best of wishes for you...

Around here people babysit for cash, they sell burritos at games and parades, they have constant yard sales and many other revenue producing activities which include profit from drug sales, selling monthly WIC products (milk, juice, cheese, diapers) house keeping, gardening, day labor the get free aren't reported to the government and so don't affect their benefits.

....added a few more, hope you don't mind!

I have witnessed many welfare recipients since 1975. There is no way I could categorize them to all fit in the same cubbyhole definition as for why they are there.
What I would like to add to this conversation is that no matter the reason they were there - there was no incentive to rise up out of it for those I was personally involved with. In every single case I witnessed - if they got a job - the majority of them would have to give up sure survival for a job that
A: Barely paid more
B: Had no guarantee of being there like the Govt check has
been
C: Spent at least 24-40 hrs a week to earn that money that they didn't have to before. Which also led to..
D: Now I have to find a way to take care of my kids while at work. - Another burden for only an even trade - at best - in money.
Truly no incentive built into the system, actually ends up pressuring them to stay there, but what strikes me about it is that as soon as someone is ready to break through to a new level of salary - the Govt money is yanked. It really comes across to those I knew as a big negative event - almost like a punishment for trying to pull themselves up. When I saw that the mouths of their children would and could suffer a food shortage I couldn't blame them for staying on the dole. After all, It would be my burden to bear at that point just from having knowledge of a need within my reach for helping even though I had my own family to feed too. In other words: The pressure on them was felt by me too.

My suggestion:
Continue paying the welfare for something like 3 years when they get a job. Have half the money that comes from the Govt go into something like a savings account - albeit an untouchable one for this 3 year phase. Definitely keep the subsidized housing during this phase, too. This way there is an incentive to get a better paying job - a Mega Raise in spendable income when you first become employed but a 3 year countdown to getting off is started, with a nest egg for that home, condo, whatever - at the end of it. Then we have one more off welfare and doing well. Invariably the real victims I saw go on welfare were intimidated to let go of a certain check for a not so certain job. Also, classes in successful money management should be required in all schools - even elementary.
Lastly: If there is any Fairness Doctrine stuff happening I'm suing all colleges to have half their professors be RNC-approved conservatives. That's where our real problem is coming from.
