General Motors Corp. has signaled to the United Auto Workers union that an agreement to cut GM's $5.6 billion annual U.S. health-care bill must come within the next few days, or the company could act unilaterally to cut UAW health-care spending, among other cost-cutting moves, according to people familiar with the matter.
GM officials wouldn't discuss details of the company's proposals. Union officials have said in the past that GM management is seeking cuts of $1 billion a year and changes in retiree plans that could slash $20 billion from GM's retiree health-care obligations.
Mr. Gettelfinger said the union is prepared to challenge the pay deals Delphi has offered to top executives. He also expressed irritation with Mr. Miller for taking public his case that Delphi U.S. hourly workers should accept pay and benefits packages of about $20 an hour instead of the $65 an hour they get today under their current contract.
Mr. Gettelfinger said the UAW and other unions that represent Delphi workers have been in contact, and have bankruptcy lawyers and experts on their side.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain approved Delphi's executive compensation enhancements in court on Tuesday. The UAW and other Delphi unions, the United Steel Workers and the International Union of Electrical Workers, can challenge the judge's ruling and ask him to reconsider for a number of reasons. UAW attorney Joseph Vitale declined to comment on the case or the union's strategy for overturning the judge's ruling.

The UAW would rather run GM out of business and lose all the jobs and benefits than contribute to their own survival. I,ve seen this movie before.
They probably have a point there.
