You mean scientist on the dole or scientist that winged it on their own. Edison did not say we have a crisis because it gets dark at night. He formed a company and invented the light bulb and many other things.

When government gets involved it is going to cost billions and the results are in doubt.

NASA is a prime example; it did great until it reached its goal of landing people on the moon. Except for Hubble the rest has been a make work program.

Generally, I agree with you. But of course there are some major exceptions. A lot of very important research does get done at universities.
