One way or another one side in this debate will be dining on crow.

Not necessarily. If she turns out to be a Souter, than Bush and his allies should be ashamed because there was no paper trail and a few red flags in her record. If she reliably votes with Scalia and/or Thomas, that side won't be eating crow because it was still stupid to gamble with the Court and the other side of the argument didn't have any special insights into her Constitutional philosophy - they will have gotten extremely lucky.
