When you're young, stupid, have a pilot's license and no brains, you can do just about anything at least once. At the time, five or six guys sitting around a table at TGIFridays, bragging about what could be done, it may have seemed like something "cool" to do. I thank god every day that the Army had a hold of my britches when I was that age.

You would have thought he would have at least returned the plane.

Yeah, and they kept me in the field most of the time until I grew a few more brain cells.
Still did enough stupid stuff to fill a book when I was off duty.

Oh yes! I remember landing my Aeronca 7AC in my girlfriend's front yard! She lived on a farm and had a pretty big front yard, but certainly not really big enough for that stupid prank. Seemed like a good idea at the time though. I still hear about it every time I encounter a member of her family!
Even so, there is still a minimal level of skills necessary to fly that aircraft, and pilot or not, if you don't have that skill level you are likely to have a bad flight (assuming you're able to get airborne in the first place!).
Maybe I'm just suspicious by nature, see my post on the memo 'intercepted' in Iraq recently, but I am going to have to reserve final judgment on this story for a bit.
