Huh? The catcher could simply throw the ball to first base....

Yes he could, but at the same time a runner is out if avoiding a tag in such a manner.

And as a side note my point was wrong in this case, it didn't come in to effect here. Sonar pointed out the rule wherein before he becomes a runner the batter can go out of the baseline before he starts his move to first.
