Alice Martínez was focused on passing out health information Tuesday while others in the consulate Tuesday worried more about their running toddlers, their immigration status and other, more immediate matters.
Martínez was trying to get visitors to todays Ventanilla de Salud, or window to health, which will be in the lobby of the consulate to educate people about services at Su Clínica Familiar.
Any organization that provides health information has to get the community involved in the interest of their own health, said Martínez, public relations specialist for Su Clínica Familiar.
The clinic is a co-sponsor for this weeks Binational Health Week, organized by the Institute of Mexicans in the Exterior, the consulates of Canada, the United States and Mexico, as well as the Mexican secretary of health.
Binational Health Week events are meant to pool resources from a variety of agencies in order to assist Mexican workers and their families in the United States in preventing diseases and promoting good health.
Its a good idea because people can learn about how to improve their health, said Bárbara Gutiérrez, spokeswoman for the Mexican consulate in Brownsville.
Forty-six Mexican consulates in the U.S., four consulates in Canada and 25 U.S. and 17 Mexican states will participate in the health week.
Su Clínica Familiar will participate in several events this week including the Ventanilla de Salud and will be at the consulate today to provide information about nutrition, diabetes, cancer and the states Childrens Health Insurance Program.
Its great because lots of people dont know about this, said Andrea Martínez of Brownsville.
Martínez inquired about health information in between chasing her 1-year-old son Daniel around the consulate lobby.
I like the fact that theyre here because there are a lot of children who are sick and dont have insurance, she said.
Binational Health Week activities are scheduled this week throughout the city.
All events are held at the Mexican consulate located at ITECC, 301 Mexico Blvd.

Clinic Week Aims to Even Up Health Disparities Vision and dental screenings, blood pressure checks, mammograms, cancer workshops and other services will be offered at Alameda County health centers, community clinics and a few private hospitals today through Oct. 17. But the emphasis will be on providing information about low-cost health insurance programs available to immigrant families but often not used. Organizers say many families do not know the programs exist or are afraid to go because of their immigration status. Mental health disorders and related illnesses are now among the primary concerns. "Adapting to a new country takes its toll," Binational Health Week Director Rosario Alberro said. "Depression, alcoholism and severe stress have become more and more common. People affected by this go without treatment." snip OAKLAND, CA Undocumented immigrants in Northern California can receive free health services and information during the fifth Binational Health Week, which starts this weekend.
