A president like Clinton would gladly turn over the control of the internet to the UN - especially if he could get a campaign contribution out of the deal!
Thanks a lot for the explanation!

Haint no thang jellybean. We try to help. Of course, it is a little more complicated than that, but that is pretty much the barebones version of the current ICANN situation. I may be off in some details, and someone will probably correct any errors in my post. These FReepers are generally a pretty smart bunch and errors don't slide by for long. The UN and other countries are trying to force a political solution to a technological problem. The situation will right itself soon as more and more computers, and supporting components, move to the 64 bit architecture. This is one issue the US gov needs to remain strong on. The internet was initially developed by the US military as something called ARPA/DARPAnet by the (Defense) Advanced Research Projects Agency and was designed to maintain communications between American facilities in case of nuclear attack. More info on the formation of the internet can be found here.
This is insanity if we were to do this. It's like giving the UN taxing authority over every .COM business. I could see Apple and Google having to fork out 60, 70, 100 million a year to some Kofi Anan rathole so they can balance out global "inequities".
This is no different than opening the doors to Fort Knox to everyone outside the US.
Listen up world - and American who fancy themselves "citizens of the world" - America built the 'net and you use it because of our good graces. If you don't like it, you have always been free to build you own.
If some idiot US politician gives it away, then I would immediately recommend building another net independent of the current 'net.
