John McCain's New Gravitas 'Maverick' Senator Charts the Course On Numerous Policy Initiatives By DAVID ROGERS Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL October 12, 2005; Page A4
WASHINGTON -- Just as Republicans here worry about losing their way, a 69-year-old maverick, Sen. John McCain, is finding a new path for himself: problem solver.
Many in this city regard the Vietnam War Navy pilot and former presidential candidate as a self-righteous demagogue. Others long have considered him the heir to the Western-bred conservatism of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan.
But beginning this spring, when the "Gang of 14" -- in which he was prominent -- pulled the Senate back from a standoff over judicial filibusters, Mr. McCain has often staked out positions ahead of a troubled White House and Republican leadership. He chuckles at the idea, having been attacked by George Bush's 2000 campaign as merely a talker. Yet more and more he has stepped out -- on the budget, immigration and the treatment of detainees in the war against terror.

Almost stopped reading this piece.....still a good read.
I will do everything in my capacity to DEFEAT him in the 2008 primaries.
After reading this article I am going to get sick.
I already fell ill and puked a few times on the computer. :-)
Are they friggin' serious? Mercy sakes, that line was harder to swallow than the notion of his restoring direction to a supposedly lost GOP! If the GOP is lost, it is because of sellouts like him.
Not too soon, I hope. I want to see if he's going to get hopped up on Diet Coke again and do another wild speech about being Anakin Skywalker slicing and dicing the Jedis or something.
Is it that bad? Dare I read it before I go to bed?
These "Others" must be the people on DU?
Or the Deaniacs?
He won't be my savior. Ever.
LOL!!
Well, since you have ample warning, you may actually get a giggle or two. Depends on the expectations.
Others=MSM.
I saw a documentry on that on maybe the History Channel, could that be right?
Hm....
I don't know, but I was darn glad I got my dinner under the belt a good long while ago. This thing really needs a barf alert.
The Patsters and wingnuts are paving the way for him.
LOL!!!!!!!!
That is a great one. Yes, I should have done the Barf Alert.
May be the Admin can do it. :-)
That's what I'm thinking.
Then, when Hillary gets the nod from the DNC, the press will all turn on McCain.
It isn't the strawberries you ought to worry about. You're in the greatest danger if you are between him and a microphone or a TV camera.
