He's not an Aldo Leopold, but John McPhee (if you like the outdoors and don't know him, he's worthwhile) wrote an interesting essay on New Jersey bears back in the 1980s. An explosion in the making way back then.

The .270 is a necked down .30-06, a great round in it's own right. There are many rounds either necked up or down on the .30-06 case.
